Hi, my name is Larry Hilyard - I am sixty-something and retired (from the US Navy in 1987 and BCBSFL in 2006. After retiring I indulged in food and snacks and was just not too active; actually kind of a couch potato! I joined SP to help support my spouse who was also a new member so we could both get healthier and enjoy many more years of retirement together! Since I joined SparkPeople, I met my goal weight and I became a Runner, thanks to the Couch to 5K Program (appropriately named; especially in my case!). In 2014, I learned I had a mobility-threatening spinal fluid flow blockage/ syrinx (syringomylelia) which could have resulted in quadriplegia. Thanks to the doctors at Mayo Clinic, I have recovered from spinal surgery in June 2014 and am running again! I am now working on getting back to healthy living and losing 20 pounds regained during 3 months in bed and on pain meds. Life is good and I am supremely blessed and grateful... just a lot slower now!

My Goals:
-Ongoing- maintain goal weight of 150 within 2 lbs and continue with improved fitness goals!
-Complete the US Navy PRT with better than passing scores (got running down, need more pushups and situps).
-Increase my endurance.
- Run a 13.1 mile Half Marathon in 2012 (Done!!)


My Program:
-Use fitness tracker daily
-Walk every day
-Run or bike every other day 3x/wk
-Strength Training

- Continue running and entering races!



Personal Information:
I am proud to have been raised on a farm in Oregon and to have served 20 years in and be retired from the US Navy. I am lucky to have been married to a wonderful caring person who is also my best friend, for over 45 years. I am now living in a Florida beach community where I retired from a second career.

Completed Couch to 5K running program!

August 2010 - attained goal weight of 150 - Lost 33 pounds (23 with SparkPeople)!!

November 2012 - still maintaining goal weight!

7/17/2010- 5K 35:44 - Bridge of Lions St Augustine FL

10/30/2010- 5K 29:58 - Susan B Komen Memphis- Midsouth Race for the Cure Germantown TN

1/23/2011- 5K 29:28 - Palm Coast FL Half Marathon - 2nd in age division, overall 33/165

4/17/2011- 10K Kansas Half Marathon Lawrence KS 1st in age division, overall 113/192 Official time 53:29 but the race was short; not a full 10K.

9/5/11- Labor Day Chick-Fil-A 5K Memphis TN time 28:38 7/23 in age division.

3/18/12 - Germantown TN Half Marathon my 1st! Time 2:22:40 with the help of my SparkBuddy AbsoluteZero!!

7/21/12 - Bridge of Lions 5K St Augustine FL - placed 3rd in age div with PR of 27:20

9/3/12- Labor Day Chick-Fil-A 5K Memphis TN time 28:34 6/24 in age div. <
