Fat at forty?

I've been overweight since I was 21. I realized not long ago that in two years I will have spent half my life fat. I also realized I was driving my blood sugar too high. I have been successful in the past with low-carb eating, even losing around fifty pounds, but I regained thirty of it eating what the Paleo community calls "safe starches," basically any sort of starch without gluten in it. I put myself up to a blood sugar of 222 having sushi (with rice, natch) for dinner and my fasting ...
I've been overweight since I was 21. I realized not long ago that in two years I will have spent half my life fat. I also realized I was driving my blood sugar too high. I have been successful in the past with low-carb eating, even losing around fifty pounds, but I regained thirty of it eating what the Paleo community calls "safe starches," basically any sort of starch without gluten in it. I put myself up to a blood sugar of 222 having sushi (with rice, natch) for dinner and my fasting sugars were edging up just above 100, which is prediabetic range. (I am not diabetic yet but my mother was diagnosed at my age and I have to watch out.) Enough already.

So I set my goal date here at SparkPeople to be my 42nd birthday. I actually expect that if I stick with it this time I will get to my goal sooner, but I'm giving myself the wiggle room because I'm too perfectionistic already.

If you're interested, I'll be posting progress pics here (click Photos tab to see them all) as well as at my blog (info elsewhere if you look). They're not fun to look at but I think they're important because I can lose sight of how things are going.

My Goals:

No diabetes

Better physical fitness

...I am actually flexible as far as my goal weight. It depends on how I look and feel at that weight. I might go lower, I might be happy at 150, you just never know.

My Program:
Diet: low-carb. Mostly Paleo though I still get dairy and sucralose and occasional soy sauce. I am weaning off coffee and when I'm done I will stop eating dairy and soy for a while, and won't "need" the sucralose.

Exercise: Nothing yet but I have a few ideas. Will update as that changes.

Mom, cat slave, artist/crafter, dabbles around with writing.
