The Second Journey

My name is Coti and I joined Spark People in May of 2012 and lost 40 pounds using the tracking tools and teams for inspiration. I read a lot of articles and learned a lot about my eating habits and some about exercise.

I have a gym membership. I went there last week and it took me twenty minutes to walk a third of a mile. I hadn't been there in over a year before that. A nasty fall down the stairs in November 2012 derailed my first journey to a healthier me on a physical level and ...

I have a gym membership. I went there last week and it took me twenty minutes to walk a third of a mile. I hadn't been there in over a year before that. A nasty fall down the stairs in November 2012 derailed my first journey to a healthier me on a physical level and I let that get me down mentally too.

I am back again in June 2014 to start over again. I have put all the weight back plus ten more pounds. I am at 265 pounds and losing. It hasn't gone anywhere yet, but it will. I am bound and determined.

Thankfully this time, I am a non-smoker finally and if I lose this time I won't have that stress hanging over my head of trying to quit like I did the last time. I ran my first 5k last time. I want to get there again and I will.

I want to get back to the things I know worked for me before (tracking, tracking, tracking, & motivation). But also I have to have a plan at some point this year about how I am going to prevent myself from getting derailed again in the face of injuries.

I have arthritis in my pelvic bone and spine and other places too. Pain is a daily thing and injuring myself happens. Bad flare ups happen. This time I need to find my way through those things and not let them become a stopping point for me.

Lessons from my last journey here losing 40 pounds in 2012:

Some important things Spark People is teaching me:

1. Food is FUEL. [Eat more healthy foods, add more nutrition. Stop thinking of what I shouldn't have and concentrate on what I NEED to have. It helps eliminate the bad habits without feeling deprived.]

2. I can do this. [Probably the four most important words in my vocabulary and they're tiny words in size... but huge in meaning.]

My Goals:
Start weight on June 4th, 2014 - 265 lbs

Goal 1 - Lose 10 pounds!

Hit 255
Hit 245
Hit 235
Hit 225
Hit 215

Goal 2 - Lose 10% of body weight!

Lose 10% of my body weight. (Lose 26.5 lbs)

Goal 3 - Reach 'overweight' category in BMI!

Reach 195 lbs.

Goal 4 - Reach 'healthy' category in BMI!

Reach 160 lbs.

My Program:
The Plan:

Find more FUN ways to get in physical activity as frequently as possible and include the kids!

Strength training at least 2 Xs a week.

Cardio at least 3 Xs a week.

Stick to calorie range provided by SparkPeople.

I've decided to attack my weight loss in chunks. 10 pounds at a time so that the task doesn't seem so daunting. A hundred pounds is pretty overwhelming to think about. Ten seems a lot more manageable. I'll just do it ten times. : )

Personal Information:
I was born in Southern Indiana. I have lived in Connecticut for six years now. My name is Coti Luttrell. I'm 35 years old. I'm unemployed, mostly due to the chronic pain. My current motto getting me through is that I am in pain if I work out and I am in pain if I don't, so I might as well be working out.

Other Information:
Knowledge of the self is the mother of all knowledge. So it is incumbent on me to know my self, to know it completely, to know its minutiae, its characteristics, its subtleties, and its very atoms. - Khalil Gibran

Don't beat yourself up with what you cant do physically. Find a set of things you can do and do them till you can add something more to your regiment...i started out with just chair exercises and graduated from them to my stationary bike and my ab lounger, it took a while but i just put one foot in front of the other and kept the long range goal in sight...you can do whatever you put your mind too...another saying "when you think about quitting think of why you started"!!!!! have a great Tuesday! emoticon
