    I'm new at the swimming thing. I've always been able to swim but never was taught the correct way each stroke. I started about 1 1/2 yrs ago with 3 mornings a week of water aerobics as a way to get exercise and lower the pain level in my hips from bursitis due degenerated discs. The workouts with the PT trainer only seemed to worsen the situation so the water seemed a better approach--and, it was! I steadily improved and the pain went WAY down.

    We got a new instructor for the water aerobics at our parks and recreation center who pulled me aside one morning and asked me to swim across the width of the pool and back again holding some foam floats. When I got back to him he told me I was too strong for the class I was in and he wanted me to come to his Tues/Thurs deep water class. I told him the M-W-F group were now my friends and my hubby also attended so I wouldn't quit that but would give the Tues-Thurs class a try. Wow! what a workout! I really liked it so have added that to my exercise routines.

    I learned he was a college scholarship swimmer and he has lots of experience so when I learned of the Senior Games and that they have swimming as one of the categories, I went to him asking if he could teach me how to get ready for them. I figured it would be a good goal to reach for since I am now in the pool 5 mornings a week. The Tues-Thurs group is 5 to 6 women of varying swim abilities who are there just for some good exercise. He's now making the class more focused on correct form and strengthening our skills and endurance. The other women aren't interested in the Senior Games but at least I'm getting some training. The women who swim in the games all train uptown & I don't want to travel to that pool so I'm trying to learn at the pool close to my home. If I can keep improving, I'll see about going to the uptown pool. I hope I can get the Parks & Rec to get something going at my pool.

    I don't know anything about competing, going off blocks, doing flip turns, nor how to do the butterfly nor breaststroke so hope I can learn from chatting with others and watching youtube.

    I hope this SP group will be a good source of info and encouragement for me. I don't know if I'll be ready to compete next Spring but I'm going to give it a try to prepare and we'll see where I am next March.
