Hi!

In the past ten years it has been harder and harder for me to keep my weight down. I am middle-aged (52) and I'm battling the metabolism demons. Like a lot of people my age my children are leaving home and I'm adjusting back into a life style where I can put myself first. Yay! For me, that means that I need to identify how I want to move forward and live my best life.

Last night I was reading a book on health and fitness that I bought in high school. What I noticed was that much of what was written then, still applies today. Eat right and exercise. I had success when I used Spark People two years ago to lose weight for my son's wedding and so I decided to use the tools again to reach my new goal - 48 lbs. in 48 weeks. Here is the math -

At my height (5'3"), my weight should be 109 lbs.
At 109 lbs. I would burn 12 calories per lb. to maintain - 1308 calories total per day
If I take in 1200 calories a day I will be in a deficit of 108 calories per day
To burn one lb. of fat per week I need to burn 3500 calories
108 x 7 = 756 calories from 3500 calories total
That leaves a deficit of 2744 calories needed to burn for 1 lb.
2744/7 days = 392 calories to burn each day

So, I know that for me, setting a goal and breaking it down works best. One day at a time. :)

I want to continue walking in the evening and riding my bike to work. My goal as I move toward the end of the year is to add weight training. I gotta fix these arms and lift the butt!
