Some of our diabetic team members cannot have "healthy sugars", so we also share and research alternative sweeteners on this team, attempting to find the healthiest and least artificial amid the bewildering array of sweeteners and the maze of information. We go through them one by one and post threads and articles.
There are alot of threads discussing different sweeteners just waiting for you to peruse them. They are organized like a library, all you have to do is go to a sticky thread, like the Splenda thread is one example, and click on the links. In the aspartame thread you will find links to articles and also free full-length movies online, such as Sweet Misery.
We want to spread the word about the dangers of aspartame, aka AminoSweet, Equal, NutraSweet, Spoonful; and liquid stevia that is mixed with aspartame. There is the unlabeled use of aspartame in processed foods, children's vitamins like Flinstone, prescription & OTC medication, gum & mints, Tylenol, milk; Mars candy bars who's ingredients SAY "natural flavoring" but admit it's really aspartame when you call them; and I could go on and on since it's now in over 14,000 products. Hints aspartame is in a product, even if unlabeled, are PKU on the label, and 'natural flavors' in the ingredients list (natural flavors may or may not be aspartame, neotame, and/or MSG - I no longer buy anything if it includes "natural flavors" on the label). You also need to ask your pharmacist about "inactive ingredients" and read the inert ingredients list in medications. Can you believe aspartame, which causes seizures in some, is an inert ingredient in epilepsy medication???!!! If you don't ask you won't know that you're ingesting aspartame, neotame, sorbitol, sucralose, acesulfame-k, etc.
Neotame is even worse. It is estimated that the toxic sweetener neotame is between 7,000 to 13,000 times sweeter than sugar, which would allow food manufacturers to use less (much MUCH less, a tiny teeny amount) in their products. And since the FDA does not require labels to include ingredients that contribute less than one percent of the product, in some (many!) instances neotame can be used in foods without having to be listed on the label. Neotame is also hidden under the infamous "natural flavors" category on some packaged foods. Another reason to never buy anything that has natural flavors on the label.
A new scary twist by food manufacturers is to combine several sweeteners together in one processed food, beverage, or medication (see the thread located in General Discussion about Orbit Gum); and the addition of UNLABELED aspartame and neotame into thousands of regular, non-diet food products. If you combine several, and each one of the several is less than one percent of the product, then you don't have to list any of them on the ingredients list . . .
Three of the aspartame symptoms on the FDA's list of 92 are Weight Gain, Increased Hunger, and DEATH. The FDA declined to release the list of 92 aspartame symptoms publicly, so it had to be obtained through filing a FOIFA request (freedom of information act). My sister was a heavy user of artificial sweeteners; she died in Dec 2010 from cancer. She was only 51. We can save lives by spreading the word about aspartame and Splenda on SP! SparkRecipes are full of Splenda! So many Sparkers simply do not know.
