Living the Spark

SparkPeople is a great place for new beginnings. But I had my own "new beginning" in August 2007, when a poster on a Star Trek message board encouraged people who were concerned about their own weights to join SparkPeople, as she had done. And with that post, "Miss Chicken" gave me the tools I needed to change my life. I have never met her, and likely never will, but I owe her -- and SparkPeople -- a huge debt.

When I started here, I was nearly 100 pounds above my best weight. I couldn't play with my son for more than five minutes without gasping for breath. I was uncomfortable even when sitting still.

I've lost 96 pounds since then. And what have I gained? I can play with my son until he's bored of it! I can ride a bike, as I hadn't in 30 years. I can enjoy things, like cross-country hiking, that moms younger than me think they're "too old" for. I can look in the mirror and see toned muscles. I can wear flattering clothes.

I reached my goal weight in September 2008, but I'm not done yet -- since that time I've put on a few pounds that need to come back off. So I'm working on my healthy habits again, trying to get back down to goal and this time make sure that I remember, and persist, in using the lessons I learned getting there.

My Goals:
I'm done with being the fat lump on the couch. One of my goals when I started here was to be thinner, stronger, and fitter so that I could share more physical activities with my young son, and with my husband of more than 12 years. And by golly, now I can!

My Program:
I'm trying to eat appropriately every day -- keeping records seems to help more than anything at keeping me honest.

I exercise every day. I started out with walking, and that's still a favorite -- in tolerable weather, I enjoy the great outdoors, and in bad weather I either go to the mall or "walk" with Leslie Sansone's DVDs. But I've gotten braver now, and also enjoy some fun new and new-to-me things like bicycling, trampoline jumping, and even skating. If I need fresh ideas, I apply to my young son, who always has loads of fun ideas for physical activities. I highly recommend preteens as resource people for this!

Personal Information:
A middle-aged bibliophile from the not-quite-wilds of western Pennsylvania (that's in the northeast U.S.). Libertarian, Unitarian, a freethinker if you like me and a crank if you don't. I like to write short stories and poetry, and enjoy arguing WAY too much!

Other Information:
I love classical literature and poetry, and am also an avid fan of science fiction and fantasy! An overage lit geek, that's me. But hey, I like it! And I should probably mention that I came over here from the TrekBBS. Which makes me not only a geek, but also a Trekkie -- but ya better smile when ya say that, pardner!

What I want to know is where some of these calorie counts come from that I find.... How could either over 500 calories or over 700 calories be in the same menu item from Wendy's?

I ate very reasonably today, but went over???
