Fit Over 70

Hi:
My name is Robert Dawson but my kids and grands have given me the handle of BobD and it has kind of stuck over the years.

I am 72 years old and a long time firm believer in staying fit. Exercise, strength training and a healthy eating lifestyle are the best meds I know for maximizing your health even if one has health issues.

Here are some things I have learned over the years that might
be helpful to others.

Being fit kind of got instilled in me when I was in the Air Force(1960-1963) I slacked off in the late 60s and early 70s. My weight got up to 220 and I knew I had to do something. I stopped smoking in 1975 and started jogging that year after reading Jim Fix's book on running and have never looked back.

As a retiree I continue to believe in staying fit and the research backs it up that staying fit (aerobic and strength training) is good for your health - mind and spirit.

It is never too late to start an exercise/strength/diet program and sparkpeople.com is an excellent tool to keep track of your progress.

My view of a healthy lifestyle are:
1) FIT = Frequency + Intensity + Time
2) Diet - Weekly Body intake of calories less then weekly number of calories burned.
3) Adequate Sleep - Recent studies show that the number of hours one sleeps effects ones health and well-being regardless of how well you do 1) and 2).

Adequate sleep is defined as 8 hours a night. Let's just say I am working on this one :) Cause as you age achieving 8 hours of sleep is quite difficult to accomplish.

RE Belly Fat (comes with age)

"To keep your belly in check, remember the acronym SED: Strength training to preserve muscle mass, Exercise aerobically to burn fat, and your Diet should be healthy, calorie-controlled, and include heart-healthy fats."

If you keep this in mind you can make improvements.

WITHOUT GOALS TO SHOOT FOR WE WOULD NOT KNOW HOW TO MEASURE HOW FAR WE HAVE COME.
