Me with my baby Molly on a hiking trip in 2005. I weighed in the mid-150s here.

Me with one of the shelter dogs where I volunteer, circa 2008. Hiding my fat under a sweatshirt!

September 2011: Ran my first half marathon in 2:20:05. Can't wait to do it again!

From slacker to runner

I'm a former fattie who woke up one day in 2010 and realized I was obese and it was time to do something about it. I already had high blood pressure, I was tired all the time, and I would get winded simply walking up the driveway to my car. I knew if I didn't do something to stop the downward spiral I was on, my health problems would worsen.

I enrolled in Jazzercise class, walked, hiked, and occasionally swam laps at the gym. Pretty soon, my walks got boring and I added running ...

Pretty soon, my walks got boring and I added running intervals into them to spice things up. At first I couldn't run more than a quarter of a mile at a time. But before long, I was running several miles at a time, nonstop.

Now I've traded Jazzercise for a circuit training class that combines boxing and kickboxing with HIIT similar to CrossFit. I ran my first race -- a 15K offroad -- in May 2011. Since then I've run a couple dozen races, including a road marathon and a 40-mile trail race.

Since I re-joined Sparkpeople in March 2010, I've lost 60 pounds, my blood pressure has returned to normal, and I have SO much energy to burn. I still have a few more pounds to lose in order to improve my running speed, although at this point, I'm more concerned with body fat percentage than weight -- but I know I will get there eventually. I love to run!

P.S. -- I don't have any photos of myself at my all-time high weight of 191 pounds. I'd like to have some for comparison, but apparently I spent much of my fat years hiding from the camera!

Thanks for your comment on my dailySpark.com blog. I have had the opportunity to meet Scott twice in my running adventures and he is such a humble and well-grounded man. He, too, is a fabulous running inspiration.

I wish you continued success with your running!

Saw your comment on BTLSMUM's page and just wanted to say:

If you've wanted to try derby, try it! Most teams have a freshman program that will teach you to skate. Most of my team's best players couldn't stand on skates. I, myself, am very overweight and learning to skate. It's a sport like no other! There's no base athletic skill required, no age restrictions, no lifestyle restrictions... everyone is welcome and everyone is beautiful!

peace, love, and derby!

I read you comments in the "stop exercising so hard" article. I just wanted to stop by and let you know that you aren't alone in feeling like it's tough to find like-minded people on SP. But, they are here! I see them on the message boards and on some of the teams. I do hope you'll stick around! :)

The article rubbed me the wrong way, but at the same time it fueled my fire! LOL
