Welcome. I'm Brian and this is where I post my goals and accomplishments on SparkPeople.com. I love to hike, bike and be outdoors. I am on a journey towards health and happiness. My biggest obstacle along this road is emotional eating.

I'm always making plans, setting new goals and challenging myself. I recently took up running and mountain biking. Stop by often to see what I'm up to. Leave comments or suggestions below.

My Program:
Mindfulness:
~ Start the day with yoga
~ End the day in loving kindness
~ Take mindful moments on the back porch

Workout plan:
~ Tuesday, Thursday- Run (40 - 60 minutes)
~ Monday, Wednesday - Strength
~ Wednesday, Saturday - Cross (hiking/biking)
~ Rest - Friday
~ Sunday - Long slow run

Meal plan:
~ Eat a mainly plant-based diet
~ Weekly meal plans and daily journalling
~ 5:2 juicing challenge

Other:
~ Participate in the seasonal 5% Challenge
~ Stay connected to my Spark Friends
~ lead and in
~ Change my program regularly to stay engaged



Personal Information:
I live in the Pacific Northwest near Seattle. I'm a 50-something technical writer, mountaineer, bicycler, hiker, illustrator, gardener, runner and father of one. I lost my wife in 2014 after an 11 year battle with cancer. I love dogs, but I live with a cat. We don't seem to mind.

    I'm exhausted. Behaving is HARD WORK! emoticon

    I did have good results with my Health and Fitness Class. In two weeks, I lost 1/2" on my hips and about 3 pounds - breaking a plateau. I plan on having even better results with the challenge!

    So, I need to work my biceps and that's where you come in. I will be cracking the whip! emoticon (Don't let that innocent looking whip fool you) I heard you outran the dog catcher last challenge, but she's been practicing for a marathon! How do you plan to stay ahead of her this challenge???

    Day Two went OK I was on the highest end of my intended calories, but who would have thought that two platefuls of salad would have 400 calories!! emoticon Granted, I added sunflower seeds for protein, but 400 calories??!!?? Then right before bed I was hungry so I added an 80calorie orange. emoticon
    I also didn't make time for too much exercise. emoticon That is my bad. I also did not do any schoolwork!! emoticon emoticon emoticon . I guess I will call it my unwind day. Today I am back to "OhMyGodIHaveSoMuchToDoToday!" emoticon because a have a couple of awesome buddies! emoticon

    Are you going to any awesome places outside the kennel? Diane and MaryAnn are keeping an eye on me so I am on my best behavior. emoticon

    Sorry to hear about your magnesium reprimand :( I give many, many bonus points for brussel sprouts.
    Some of these fruits remind me of the KoolAid guy, but the strawberry looks kinda, "But I don't wanna eat my magnesium because it is in Brussel Sprouts"

    ewwww! Brussel sprouts! Sorry, I think it is the only vegetable I do not enjoy.

    I did well today. I tracked my food and exercise -- got in some cardio. emoticon And I drank water! emoticon Now to keep it up for 55 more days emoticon

    I will buy myself a Fitbit or replace my Omron pedometer if I lose 5% in this challenge! Plus I will start looking at Mother of the Bride dresses in a smaller size! emoticon emoticon emoticon
