I'm On My Way!
I was always overweight, starting at birth when I weighed over 9 lbs! I have tried a variety of diets...and drugs, including Redux in the mid-1990's, where I lost 100 pounds but put it back on again in a couple of years after they took it off the market. About four years ago, the rotator cuff in my right shoulder tore, requiring surgery, and the surgeon said that the probable reason was that I was so heavy-breasted that it pulled on my shoulder. So, I investigated breast reduction surgery and was told by a plastic surgeon that they wouldn't talk to me until I weighed less than 200 pounds. This was in mid-2008. After about a year of not doing anything, I found out at my annual medical checkup that I was pre-diabetic. So, I just decided to get healthy. The doctor and I agreed that I would come in monthly, and that I would try to eat healthy, keep a food log, and get some exercise. (Sounds like SparkPeople, huh?) So, since November, 2009, I've been doing just that, and in February, 2010 I found SparkPeople, which I think has made all the difference. I averaged losing about 8 pounds a month for 13 months, and made my goal weight in June 2011. I had breast reduction surgery on April 4, 2011 and a tummy tuck on May 23, 2011 to get rid of all the skin that is left after a 100+ pound weight loss. Update January 2013: I have gained back 48 pounds, but I am now back on the program and headed in the right direction.

My Goals:
1. Eat at least 6 fruits and veggies daily. 2. Weight Loss Goals: 221 lbs (35 lbs lost) 2/23/10 140 lbs GOAL! 6/15/11 ...a lot of backsliding... 162 lbs 11/15/2011 188lbs 12/21/2012 180lbs 175lbs 170lbs 165lbs 160 lbs 155 lbs 150lbs 145lbs 140lbs 135 lbs 3.Exercise regularly, at least 5x per week for at least 30 minutes. 4. Track my food and exercise daily...and I mean the whole day's worth, not just breakfast and lunch!) 5. Have the nicest yard/garden on the block. (This will be tough...a botanist lives across the street!)
My Program:
I'm eating lots of fruits and vegetables, kind of limiting carbs (or at least eating whole grain ones...) I don't eat a lot of meat, and do lots of healthy snacking) Mostly I'm just limiting portion size. Recently I've had some issues with this and injuries and consequently have gained back about 48 pounds, but I'm back in the groove now and headed in the right direction. My plan is to go to the gym 6 days per week. Do the treadmill, circuit training (like Curves, but not AT Curves!), the bicycle, rowing machine, and Pilates twice a week. I try to walk a couple of miles a day on the treadmill, and try to get at least 10,000 steps in every day.
Personal Information:
I'm from the middle of Illinois and work as a librarian and faculty member at a state university. I'm the education librarian and run a teachers center, so I buy children's books and educational materials to be used by students planning to become teachers.
Other Information:
I have a dog, Chica and a cat, Wasabi. Chica is a chihuahua mix who lives a lot bigger than she is. Wasabi is exactly like his name. He loves to eat everything, including grapefruit and kiwis!
