Finding Me

Somewhere between life, duty, responsibility, parenting, being a friend, a confidant, a sounding board, a volunteer, a student, and wearing a host of other hats I got lost. The person I am. She became enveloped, cloaked, weighted down and simply disappeared.

I used to see her looking back at me in the mirror, but I ignore her. I stopped looking in the mirror and she stopped looking back at me. As the pounds accumulated, she retreated.

A vibrant, vivacious, energetic bundle has been replaced by a sluggish blob and I miss her. I miss me. So, I am on a quest to find me.

I know it is cliche, but I am going to share what my 14 year son told me. When I decided that it was time to get serious about losing weight:
1) The weight won't come off over night
2) You lose weight ounce by ounce
3) You gotta start somewhere

Then he walked off and while I was pondering the wisdom of my baby, he came back gave me a hug and said "I love you, no matter how fluffy or how skinny your are."

I miss me and some where in this body is the real body I was meant to have. I don't want to be as small as I was in my 20's I simply want to look, feel, and be healthy.

My goal is to lose the other person I am carrying around, not that she is not a nice person, but she takes too much energy and is endangering my health.

I enjoy cooking and collect cook books, love to read - give me a Harlequin and keep the cash (well depends on how much cash). Love my kids and I attend school full time.

One of my goals is to walk a 10-minute mile by my next birthday, September.

Since August 2010 I have gone from barely moving and constantly tired to energetic and moving at 15-minutes per mile. I also lost 20 pounds. Yea me! I know this may sound selfish, but to get this far I have had to be a little selfish. Not by neglecting my duties and responsibilities as a parent, but by making my health and well being a priority.

My mother, who is 70+, said to me, "If you don't take care of yourself, who will take care of you. And if you damage your health, who will take care of your children?" That was a wake up call. I have weight related health issues, so who will take care of my precious children if...

My long-term goal is to be as fit as I can be for the rest of my life.
