I find I do great by dropping cookies, cakes, sugary cereals, and most processed foods while KEEPING whole grains. Whole wheat, oats, corn, etc make up a major part of my diet, and my weight is stable or slowly edging downwards and I have no health issues whatsoever (except a broken toe. Can't blame that on diet.)

I always say, eliminate the things you *know* aren't healthy, eat more of things you *know* are healthy, and don't worry too much about what you're not sure of. If you're still eating cookies, try nixing those, but that doesn't mean you have to quit eating whole-grain bread. Worry about whether you need to go wheat-free AFTER you've gone sugar free and controlled your calories.

That said, you almost certainly will lose weight, at least at first, any time you "go XYZ-free." It's far, far easier to say, "I can't eat that because it might have XYZ in it" than it is to say, "I'm not going to eat that because my body doesn't need it." If you're wheat free (or gluten free, or egg free, or maltodextrin free, or carmine free, or....), you can't eat snacks that people offer you at work or parties, you can't take a free sample at the store, you can't eat fast food or most other restaurant products, you can't grab that package of cookies at the dollar store-- you're basically limited to healthy foods you cook yourself at home. If you never eat anything you didn't cook yourself, there's a VERY high probability that you'll lose weight, at least until you start learning which restaurant and junk food products are XYZ free.

I often wonder if people who drop wheat for reasons other than true allergies, lose the weight, not so much because of the elimination itself, but because they are paying more attention to what and how much they eat???? ALSO, if you eliminate wheat, then odds are you are eliminating a lot of over-processed foods which also generally have high sugar, sodium, trans and saturated fats.

JUST food for thought!

I (and many studies) agree with the above thought.
Doing your best to not eat anything from a box &/ or premade foods and using portion control (I love the nutrition tracker here) will likely be your best first step to a healthier life.

Congrats Sherin on the elimination of processed foods from your diet! Something a lot of people struggle with (myself included, but I'm slooooowly but surely working on it. Baby steps :D)

emoticon I guess that comment about eliminating wheat products but nothing drastic would sound "funny" without all the background info .
I have pretty much eliminated most processed foods from my diet- you know, fast foods, canned foods etc and I use mainly organic local grown foods, pastured beef, chicken and dairy products. Now I will eliminate the things like bread, pasta, cookies etc. Not going Gluten free.

My motive for this is mainly to prevent health issues later on and weight loss would just be a benefit!

I haven't eaten any wheat products in 6 months. I have been slowly eliminating grain products from my diet for about 18 months. I still eat rice from time to time.

I first cut grains because of digestive issues but I have noticed improvements in other aspects of my health as well like reduced inflammation, joint swelling and improvement of a chronic skin condition.

Eating mostly vegetables, meats and fats hasn't really helped me to lose weight, but I am and was at maintenance weight already when I went wheat free. I have noticed an improvement in body composition that is the result of an improved exercise routine and my cleaned up diet. I do find I crave sugar less now though.

Some people have a sensitivity to wheat and don't know it. You could try dropping it for a bit and see if it helps you in anyway. If it does, great. If not, then you know you are okay to eat it.

I too had to chuckle at the "not anything drastic" comment.

Wheat is in practically EVERYTHING you're likely accustomed to eating. You'll be unpleasantly surprised, probably.

Best wishes on your goals. Hope it works for you, if that's what you want.
I've eliminated practically everything wheat related, too, but I cannot say that it was the cause of dropping lots of weight. Possibly because I'm pretty close to goal; and perhaps because I wasn't consuming that many baked products to begin with, so it was just a modification, rather than a drastic change.

Yeah, lol, it makes me chuckle to think that eliminating wheat isn't drastic! It is rather drastic at first, since it is in so many foods!

I don't eat wheat or most grains (I eat rice), and I am all the better for it. I'll spare you the TMI, but I'll just say that I had some chronic (years) digestive problems that have resolved! My chronic heartburn is also gone.

I've also lost 20+ lbs, but that isn't only due to eliminating wheat. I've also eliminated processed sugar. Those two things + eating a healthier "real foods" diet have helped me lose weight, I think.

I haven't done wheat in three years. i don't really do many if any grains. Yes, i noticed a difference. It is not as easy as you think to eliminate wheat. It is in lots of things.

I have been reading a book called "Wheat Belly" by Dr Williams. Because of the many interesting and eye opening things I am seeing in it I have decided to eliminate wheat from my diet. I am not doing anything drastic -just eliminating products made with wheat.
Has anyone had any experience with wheat elimination- does it help? Does it help with weight loss?
