When I hear about things like this it just amazes me. We think we are civilized but then the reality sets in. Just a short 60 years rich people were taking young young boys and making and using them as eunics. Not sure about that spelling but it was castrating so they would stay more like a young boy longer and their voices would remain quite high for singing in choirs.

Seems a bit harsh. They must think that the petty criminals will just progress to bigger crimes.

While I consider this barbaric it did remind me of a conversation I had with a policeman in NYC.
He was talking about how for a few years their PD focused on major crimes (murder, rapes, bank robbery etc) that the petty crimes(mugging, shoplifting, home invasion) went up as did major crimes.
After a few years of people complaining that the petty criminals were taking over the PD switched focus back onto petty crimes. They eventually realized that the petty criminals were also the ones committing the major crimes. when they locked up the people breaking into homes, shoplifting, mugging tourists etc the major crimes started decreasing.
So the underlying reason, punish petty crimes severely makes sense in decreasing all crime.
Obviously we don't want to amputate body parts (except for rapists and child molesters, they should lose both hands and genitalia) for a crime and no one religion should ever be able to control any court system.

I agree that it's over the top punishment. Then again, if we were a bit harder on crime in the west, people might think twice before stealing, mugging etc. I think that each case should be taken on merit - some people steal because they are desperately poor and hungry; others steal because they want nice things - or just for the thrill of it. I think we should find a way to help the desperate, but come down hard on those who steal for other reasons. make restitution? Definitely. But cutting their hand off is a bit drastic!

I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.

Shari'a is Dark Ages barbaric and sadly, it's the norm for Muslims in Arabic nations. Just keep Shari'a out of the USA.

Yes the punishment seems harsh to me but.. there are many cultures, traditions, laws etc around the world that seem barbaric to others. ( being overweight is considered good in some places and disgusting in others) emoticon

Hi, Eowyn !

I didn't know what this law was, so I had to look it up.

Even though Malaysia is a secular multicultural country, the primary religion is considered Islam. And so, there are Islamists who feel that everyone in the country (Christians, Jews, Hindus, etc) are all subject to Sharia.

I had to look this up because I didn't know what Hudud was, but it's is a form of punishment in Sharia. Sharia is Islamic law.

There is talk about enacting Hudud for all citizens of Malaysia and not just the Muslims. However, the article say that this would be difficult to enforce. It's not law yet, but some people hope that it would be. The short answer for describing Huhud would be, a punishment that fits the crime. So, if you steal something, your hand would be cut off.

I don't know enough about what's going on in Malaysia to comment.

Another ruling made by men to keep other humans down, and make the men feel as though they are worth something, when they are not. Get rid of the men who believe in this nonsense, join forces against them.

I think reducing the penalty to just a finger would be a fair compromise.

I think it's barbaric, grossly unfair, unjust and just plain overkill to amputate a hand just for mere petty theft! what about more serious crimes like rape or corruption? why go after petty theives while letting the bigger fish go?

i think the proponents of hudud are just cruel and need their heads examined!
