I read this article and have posted this before as it does help...and while your back is in repair with rest...this may make sense to you....

"A nice easy walk will improve your health
"Sitting for long periods of time when you don't stand up, don't move at all tends to cause changes physiologically within your muscles," says Phys Ed columnist Gretchen Reynolds
"You stop breaking up fat in your bloodstream, you start getting accumulations of fat ... in your liver, your heart and your brain. You get sleepy. You gain weight. You basically are much less healthy than if you're moving
If you can stand up every 20 minutes even if you do nothing else you change how your body responds physiologically."
You will lose weight, you lessen your chance of heart disease, and you will improve your brain. But if you can do nothing else, stand up!"

I did this and it helped me lose...Even wiggling your toes or figeting has a cumulative effect on body weight.

A tip... To help backaches Include foods that have rich Vitamin C content, such as citrus fruit, tomatoes, blueberries and strawberries, Basil leaves, two to three cloves of garlic in a day. Use ground black pepper on everything...the peppercorn has many benefits for healing.

You may have inflammation going on so maybe eat foods that reduce inflammation such as...acorn squash, the garlic, foods high in omega 3's and maybe some Chamomile tea to soothe the nerves. Maybe an Epson salt bath....helps muscles and nerves to work properly and makes insulin more effective.... helps sprains and even bruises.

Of course check with your doctor and maybe ask about water therapy that may assist you in getting better and pain free. Also a square or two of dark 80% chocolate helps with muscle soreness.

Hope you feel better soon.

I'm struggling today too. I'm suffering from PTSD. I know excercise will help, but I'm too paranoid to go outside and take a walk. All I want to do is cry and eat. I keep telling myself we don't always get what we want.
I was told today that if it is five minutes old it's ancient history and I need to concentrate on now. So I have to ask myself, "What do I need right now?" What I want is food that crunches. What I need is someone to talk to to get my head wrapped around what is happening right now. I may feel hurt and alone but it's nice to know you are there. I'm sorry to hear you are having a rough day. I hope I helped you as much as you have helped me today.
By the time you finish reading this it will be ancient history and with any luck at all so will be the misery we are sharing. If you can't do what you want to, do what you can. Doing something is better than doing nothing. emoticon emoticon

I hope I can give you some comfort, support, advice and useful suggestions.

Your current situation is challenging, so you're overwhelmed. Stay calm, and think in terms of "baby steps".

Baby step your way through some of these ideas:

Think about today only. What are the illnesses and injuries that are still current today? What is your current weight today? These are your starting points.

Your back injury: are you following every instruction that your doctor gave you? Are you supposed to do exercises? Are you supposed to take medicine? Baby step your way from wherever you are today until you are following every instruction and doing every exercise. What can you do TODAY to lessen the pain of your injury TODAY?

Emotional eating: what are the healthy foods that you already love? Eat large quantities of those foods. Mine are green beans, cucumber, strawberries and apples. What are yours?

Feeling depressed and angry: what are some self-talk phrases that work for you? "Yes, I have a challenging problem, but I will handle it". "One baby step at a time".

JONEIL513,

You can't beat yourself up because you've regained some weight. This is something that has happened to every single member of spark at one time or another. We're all experts at gaining, losing and regaining the weight. That was the past. You can't change the past, but you can influence and change the future.

I give all new members and those looking for motivation one piece of advice and it's this,"Don't look at good health or weight loss with an all or nothing mentality." If the only healthy thing you did for yourself today was drink 8 glasses of water, that's still a step in the right direction.

As the old song goes,"accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative". give yourself credit for all the positive things you do for yourself and don't beat yourself up because you're not perfect. you don't have to be perfect to be healthy. start with some simple changes first.

One thing to do is re-read some of the great spark articles on emotional eating. I know things can be stressful as well as overwhelming, but there are better ways to cope than turning to food. Sit and sip a cup of tea. Take a walk. Walking is not only great cardiovascular exercise, it's a great way to reduce stress. And you have to try to reduce some of the stress and anxiety you're feeling. I firmly believe that stress is a neglected aspect of weight gain. if a person could reduce their stress, they'd automatically reduce their waistline.

Have you ever considered taking yoga ? There are yoga breathing exercises that are really helpful for reducing stress. Learning how to meditate could be helpful too.

Mostly, be kind to yourself as you would to others. You're not a bad person or a weak willed one because you've regained some weight. Accentuate that positive. You've still kept over 40 pounds off. that says you are doing something right.

I lost alot of weight, about 60 pounds, I had settled in the low 170's for quite a while. I was still overweight but I felt good and healthy. Anyway I've been battling a variety of illnesses and injuries since October. I gained back 20 pounds. I was emotionally eating and I can't seem to stop myself. I'm very depressed and angry with myself. I still really can't exercise due to a back injury. I was really working on controlling my diet and battling the emotional eating with journaling and meditation but then I fell apart again. I think i keep binging because i'm so upset with my weight gain and my pain but I know that is certainly isn't going to help my situation. If anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate it.
