Just to throw this out there--food poisoning can occur anywhere from an hour to several days after eating a contaminated food, depending on the organism that is contaminating the food. In thinking about what types of organisms would potentially be hanging out on walnuts, it wouldn't be horribly likely for you to get sick from food poisoning on the very same day that you ate the walnuts. Now (just as an example), if you'd said you just ate some nice potato salad at a picnic earlier that day, I would definitely be extremely suspicious of the potato salad because one of the organisms that loves to hang out in potato salad is associated with rapid onset of symptoms.

Must be how they were packaged as you both got sick at the same time.

never - I eat all types of nuts, but I do try to keep to that 1 oz limit.
(As a previous poster indicated, 1/2 cup is really a LOT!)

No, since they contain fiber eating to many can make a person run to the bathroom if they are not used to high fiber. So can any other nut until your body adjusts.

Since you both got sick I would agree with other who said the nuts were contaminated.

If anyone eats walnuts or any other nut and then later gets bad pain very low in the groin on the left side, you could have diverticulitis. Be very careful. I had it and didn't know it and ended up with peritonitis and needed emergency surgery. A terrible thing to go through.

Considering the walnuts were packaged, I would guess that it was either a contaminated batch (as in other packets might affect the consumers too) OR you were both in contact with someone with a bug earlier and the effects coincide with the walnuts. I guess you could ask your Doctors and the store if there has been a sudden outbreak like this, or contact your local hospital and ask questions.

You often hear of some packaged food items being recalled because they discovered someone in the processing plant had some illness. There has just been a warning here and a recall of a certain breed of peach and a couple breeds of apples, in a major retail franchise because someone in the packing/sorting line has been discovered to have Hepatitis A.

What did you both eat together several hours before eating the walnuts?

I have never gotten sick eating walnuts. I do know you have to really chew them up good, and if you eat to many, they can cramp you up.

I don't...but my mom used to get sores on the roof of her mouth if she ate them.

they were within expiration date and it was the walnuts because it seemed like shortly after we ate them we both said wow that didn't sit well in my stomach hahaha....
I think your right Anarie hahaha I believe this will turn me off of them for a while hahaha and I'm definitely going to report it...

Walnuts do not make me sick. but it's possible the oil from them upset your stomach.

That can happen to me if I eat a few too many macadamea or brazil nuts. The oil just kills my stomach.

However, others are right. You could have gotten bad walnuts. Walnuts don't store well. What's the expiration date on the package ? There should be an expiration date. check to see.

Any food can spoil. About the only foods that can't give you food poisoning are plain table sugar and high-acid vinegar.

Take the remainder of the package back to the store and report it. If it has turned you off of walnuts, don't eat them anymore. Lots of people lose their taste for a food if they think it has made them sick. I can't eat vanilla wafers because someone let me eat almost a whole box when I was three, with predictable results. But your having gotten sick (assuming it really was because of the walnuts) doesn't mean all walnuts are bad any more than all vanilla wafers are bad.

no they weren't spicy they were normal walnuts and looked extremely clean, also hubby and I had different things for lunch that day and I had cottage cheese on wheat toast in the morning, so we didn't even have the same breakfast only thing in common were the walnuts.

I've never had a problem like that after eating walnuts.
Even if 1/2 cup was a large serving I wouldn't think it would cause both of you to start vomiting or spending all day on the toilet. It sounds like they were probably bad.

I'd have to agree that 1/2 cup is a lot of walnuts. And we're all assuming they were plain walnuts. If they were, say, "hot and spicy walnuts" with a lot of seasoning on them, the seasoning could be the culprit and not the nuts themselves. Almost sounds like they might have been rancid. Or (assuming y'all ate other things during the day) it very well might have been something else you ate, but the walnuts are what's sticking in your mind.

depends on what you call sick.

nuts have natural oil in them and can definitely be a laxative. 1/2 cup is actually a very large portion - I believe 1/4 cup nuts is considered a full portion - 28grams and/or 1 ounce.

when you eat too many nuts at a sitting, going potty should not be unexpected.

try only eating a very small handful instead.

better yet, break a few into a meal (salad, yogurt, cereal, etc.).

Were the nuts out of a self-help barrel? If so, it is possible that they were contaminated. I never buy anything unwrapped from them because they are often contaminated with feces etc, and it is a VERY good way to get sick. People often put their hands in there and grab what they want, and not everyone washes their hands after their ablutions, and if they do, a lot don't wash their hands properly.

IF yours were already bagged and sealed by the manufacturers, then it is possible that you have picked up a bug from something else, but just associate it with the nuts because that is what you ate that is different.

I hope that you get over your 'running' very quickly.

I agree, since you both became ill, the nuts most likely were either bad or contaminated. Return them to the store and let them know you think you had food poisoning from them.

You might have gotten some rancid or moldy walnuts (can't always see the mold). We keep ours in a large ziplock in the freezer.

I used to be able to eat walnuts or pecans. I can't anymore and I don't know why. Horrible nausea and sick tummy. Any other nut is fine.

My husband and I opted for a nice healthy snack today, so we had bought some Walnuts neither of us have allergies to it, but wow we had about a half a cup each and we got sick to our stomach, running to the bathroom all day , anyone else ever experience this? emoticon
