I think using the term Original in this case means it is their "Original Recipe" - like the same recipe they have been using since they started making it in whatever year. I don't think they are insinuating that they improved upon anything, but rather this is what the general consumer is accustomed to buying.

I am always reminding family and friends to read INGREDIENTS. And some of those are scary and/or mysterious. My daughter bought me fat free half n half thinking it was better for me. Most of the ingredients were chemicals. The regular ingredients were milk and cream. I chose the regular for occasional use and in moderation.
Also looking at my old cookbooks I think tastes have changed as many of the old fashioned recipes did use more sugar. When I had small children we had two apple trees and I made applesauce with sugar. Now I realize how unnecessary that was.

I have never added sugar to my applesauce. It tastes absolutely fine without sugar. Just cooked apples. I agree about the additives that seems to be added to everything. That is why I like unprocessed food.
but the thing is that applesauce is traditionally made with sugar. you cook down apples and add sugar. so proper/original applesauce is supposed to contain more sugar than plain apples. originally you couldn't sell the applesauce without the extra sugar [because they would have gladly left out an ingredient and sold the stuff for the same price and a higher profit had they been able to do so]. then times change and some [very few based on how many are available in my store] people decided they would rather not have the extra sugar. so you get the kind of applesauce that you and i buy isn't the original.

On the topic of weird food additives, I once saw OJ with cottonseed oil in the ingredients. That was not appealing.
Thanks for all the replies, but I either did not state my point clear enough, or you missed the point. I eat unsweetened applesauce.I don't need help with finding the right brand.
Mott's original applesauce has 22 grams of sugar.. 4 ozs. 100 calories. my unsweetened applesauce has 10 grams of sugar.. 4 ozs. 45 calories.
The applesauce with 12 EXTRA grams of sugar is NOT original, or natural applesauce, the kind labeled " unsweetened " is the original applesauce. The brand with a bunch of sugar added is the " sweetened " brand. Unless I am wrong, and somehow they are removing 12 grams of sugar from a natural apple, they are selling the brand that they altered as original, and the brand that they did nothing to, as if they did something to improve on nature.
My point is that I don't think we even know what real food is anymore. That makes it a lot harder to eat healthy. I just decided to share my thoughts. If someone knows that they somehow remove sugar from the " unsweetened " applesauce, that would be good to know, and explain the marketing of it that way. I appreciated the info that the sugar in milk is just the natural sugars. Still too sugary for me to drink, but it may be one of the few foods that they don't add sugar or salt to.
Oh, golly, you *should* make your own yogurt. You won't believe how easy it is. It takes less than 10 minutes of prep, and then you just put somewhere warm for a few hours. Google "Make yogurt without machine." Whether it saves you money depends on how much milk costs where you are, but you'll have total control of the ingredients and it's probably the easiest homemade food there is.

Most of the instructions I've seen for making applesauce include adding sugar- sometimes a LOT of sugar. Given that the apples are also generally peeled before use, applesauce has never seemed all that nutritious to me. And since I don't like it (something about the texture :p), that makes it an easy decision not to eat.
Now additives to yogurt, that annoys me. Seems like even the ones that advertise how their ingredients are all natural and such add a bunch of junk to it. But I'm not quite prepared to start making my own.
i have to wonder if this is just a regional marketing thing. i live in florida and every time i go to buy applesauce i see the big label that says "no sugar added" and pick it up, then have to put it back because "no sugar added" means artificial sweeteners added [and i have issues with some of those]. applesauce that is just apples or apples and citric acid tends to be labeled unsweetened here. though sometimes it gets labeled as natural, though if ever there were a hit and miss term it has to be natural.
and i wouldn't lay the blame solely at the doors of the manufacturers, it should be with the people that buy the items. people vote with their dollars and their dollars go to the stuff that is loaded with fat, sugar and salt. every time i find something somewhat processed but fairly decent [dehydrated potatoes that are just potatoes rather than all sorts of things for example] it doesn't last but a few months on the market. in other words, people aren't buying the stuff that doesn't have the extra added crap to it.

Well one big reason is so they can use crappy nasty apples and have the end product come out tasting sweet and delicious. Most "industrially produced" food hides cheap/low-quality ingredients under a cover of sugar, salt and/or fat, to make it more palatable and "delicious."
Another reason is of course, "consumer taste." We have become more and more and more accustomed to "sweet" in our foods, your average consumer has come to expect it, and might find a less-sweet version distasteful.

I used to make homemade applesauce with my mom, and there was a TON of sugar in it!
I buy the store brand unsweetened. It is cheap and good

I always make my own applesauce and never with sugar. I may sprinkle a little cinnamon. It is so easy and fast to make.
By the way, this isn't new. Old-fashioned homemade applesauce almost always DID have sugar in it. Look up old recipes-- they were loaded with sugar because it worked as a preservative. My great-grandmother's applesauce recipe has as much sugar as her apple pie.
The thing about apples is that they're not all the *same* sweetness. If you own a major national brand, you want it to taste exactly the same no matter when or where people buy it. If the early harvest apples one year are a little bit sour, you would put some sugar into your applesauce so it tastes the same as what you sold at the end of the previous harvest. If you *ever* put sugar in it, your label has to say that. Sometimes it might be only a tiny bit, and occasionally the "sweetened" applesauce actually doesn't need sugar, but they're not going to re-label it. And the really cheap stuff has sugar because they make it with the ugly, sour, under-ripe apples that no one would buy whole.
It's like anything else; you have to read the label, but nobody's forcing anyone to buy the stuff with sugar. The major brands DO all make an unsweetened version; if you can't find it at your store, ask the manager to get it for you. They sell what people want to buy, so sometimes you have to let them know you want to buy it.
I decided to add a serving of fruit to my menu, and settled on a 4 oz cup of applesauce, since it has just 10 net carbs. I need to have some carbs with every meal, so it fits in.
I was going to put in the brand name, so I am reading the label. Applesnax? What surprised me is the words, " No sugar added ". I stopped and checked all the other brands, and they all add sugar to applesauce. The name brands don't have an unsweetened version, and mix apples with everything from cranberries to peaches.
Why on Earth would you add sugar to something that naturally has sugar already? The more I look at labels, the more I am convince that the reason for our obesity epidemic is the food manufacturers. Most plain, whole food is good for you, even carbs.. ( grumble, grumble ). They ruin the food, so it can last for a month.
My applesauce is kind of like my dessert. The problem is that milk is also loaded with sugar, and vegetables pumped full of salt. So now manufacturers are touting that they have invented No sugar added applesauce, and No salt vegetables. Technology has re-created what already existed for all of human history.
I just think it is amusing that we pay extra for these items now, so we can avoid all the bad food that was invented. By the way, my unsweetened applesauce is VERY sweet..lol
