Sweet potatoes have fewer calories than yams, primarily due to their carbohydrate content. 100 grams of sweet potato has about 85 calories. 100 grams of yams have about 118 calories. Yams have 2.5 times as much potassium, but sweet potatoes have 4 times as much vitamin A. Otherwise, they are pretty similar when it comes to nutritional content.
I have heard both sides of the fence--that there is no difference in calories and there is a huge difference in calories. And how do I know for sure of what I am buying is one or the other (I don't trust the produce people to label them correctly. Can anybody give me a definitive answer?
