I am now in my fourth (!) year of soreness. Some people get sore, and some don't. I don't worry about it as long as it's mildly uncomfortable (stiffness/soreness) and not crippling.
I work different muscles on each day so I'm not repeatedly working the same muscles over and over. I deadlifted today so I won't do anything involving my legs except cardio until Friday.
Some people gauge a "good" workout based on how sore they are, but this is not necessary. If you are improving but not getting sore count yourself among the lucky ones who are immune to DOMS.

When I am not increasing the intensity of my weight lifting workouts (i.e. same number of reps, sets and same lifts), I might get some very light DOMS in some stabilizer (small) muscles. However, whenever I increase either the number of reps, number of sets or the weight I am lifting, I get DOMS big time. For example, last Friday I did my usual strength training workout but I did 7 sets instead of the usual 5. That same day I was not sore at all. But yesterday I was sore in my legs, chest and arms. Today I am still sore in my legs. Hopefully I recover by tomorrow so that I can workout again. I won't workout if I am not recovered because if I do usually my workout turns out to be pretty lousy.
Some people, on the other hand, don't get DOMS at all even when they increase the intensity of their workouts or when they try some new workout.

I usually feel pretty great after walking on the treadmill and get a lot of energy. Today I think I might have overdone it. I did 48 minutes of walking and 30 minutes of kettle bell. I am so sore. I know this is a good sore so I will keep going tomorrow. Wish me luck!

I have numerous sports injuries and had an ACL repair 6 months ago so my knee still swells up and hurts after playing tennis. I don't let that stop me, I ice for about 20 minutes after I play and then hop into a hot shower. I play three times a week and do cardio/strength on the other days. There is a big difference to pain from injury and pain from pushing hard. I now like the bit of ache I get when I play hard, I know I have given my all. It shouldn't be so much pain that it effects your daily life, but a bit of an ache or burn means you are working at your maximum and a good indicator to whether you should pull back a bit. If I am working out and never feel that ache or burn, I know it is time to change up my routine because I am not getting the most out of my workout.

I am sore if I work muscles that I haven't worked. I am starting my Zumba class back on Monday, and I will probably get sore since it has been about 3 or 4 months.

I get sore after I do something new or when I increase weights/resistance as my body is being pushed harder than I previously had. Once it gets used to the new challenge, yes it is still hard, but I don't get the soreness like I do say days 1 and 2 from it.

What I know at my end when I have really done some really hard workouts, I try to shower right away and do a warm shower followed by as cold as water as I can take on my legs. It works the same as icing an injury and I don't have as much soreness then, Hope that helps.
That soreness is called DOMS - Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness. We still don't 100% know what causes DOMS, but it's neither a worry nor a requirement.
It probably comes on more from doing something unusual, or from overdoing things, than any other causes. So as you get used to what you're doing, you'll probably experience it less.
I wouldn't let it worry you. Don't change anything. Don't worry if it stops. Don't worry if it doesn't. Just work out at whatever level you still feel challenges you, but isn't "too hard" to complete. :)
I just started working out and am curious if I should feel soreness after like I have worked out. No matter whether I do dvd's or the gym the feeling of soreness/tired muscles is there but surprisingly a lot less after and hour at the gym than almost 30 minutes of a jilian micheals dvd. Does this mean I am trying too hard or not hard enough? I am not sure whats happening. If anyone was curious it was 12 minutes on the elliptical 30ish minutes on the weight machines and then 13 more minutes on the elliptical at the end. I guess I am just confused and any advice or what others have experienced would be helpful.
