Bar Method and Pilates are a great way to tone your body! I am not a huge fan of lifting weights at the gym and I have to say that I have had better results with these DVD's than going to the gym ever did for me! You have to be consistent, but they really do make a difference and one you will see and feel in a relatively short amount of time.

Have you tried looking at some of the videos on here? What about looking for DVDs at the library that focus on strength training or are cardio based strength training?
I've been slim for 5 years, do strength training as well as yoga and aerobic exercise, and have gradually gotten more toned. It takes a long time, but when you think about it, walking is not affecting muscles above your lower body. I love Body Pump and think it has made a real difference in my body. I'm 69.
Yes, I feel your pain. I am a healthy weight (115 lbs for 5 foot 4 inches) but I feel like I still have extra fat around the stomach. I understand that everyone stores fat differently......but I wish mine wasn't there! haha

Resistance bands or body weight exercises are definitely effective. If you have the room to do a plank, you have more than enough room.

If you're bored doing strength, then it's not hard enough. ;) Sufficiently challenging strength training will keep you too focused to be bored... you're trying to keep good form.
Invest in a set of resistance bands... you can usually get them for less than $20 at Walmart (I got mine for $14) and they're vastly more useful and versatile than a couple of light dumbells. You'll adapt to those so quickly they'll be useless pretty soon.
Thanks a bunch for all the comments. Unfortunately, joining any class unless it is free, is totally impossible financially. What do I dislike about strength training is boredom. I have 3 lb and 5 lb wieghts, also no room except to stand up or sit to do exercises. No room in the apartment to lie down on a mat and do any type of exercise. Any ideas for a program for me to follow?
As everyone else here said, strength training is the only way to get a lean, toned look. It's amazing how many inches I lost when i was working out in a gym in 2009. But after my second baby, I'm not in a position to go to one as he is unmanageable by his grandparents. I'll definitely rejoin once he starts preschool.
I hate to be the one with the bad news.......but strength training is the only way to tighten your body up. You just need to find a way to like it. There are so many ways. A kettle bell program is a good one......resistance bands are good. Also a good weight training class like group power is good. once you do this you will be amazed how much your body can change for the better..........

I agree that you need to do strength training - but diet plays a huge role as well. I strength train 3x per week, plus do cardo 2-3 times per week, and I didn't tone up the way I wanted to until I changed my diet - more protein, more veggies, no wheat (but whole grains), etc. It's a combination.
What is that you don't like about strength training?

If you don't like strength training, but want to learn, I too highly recommend trying a group weight training class like Body Pump. If you don't have pump, I'm sure your gym has some other weight training group class. you might try a boot camp if you don't want to try pump.
If you want to see some "definition" in your body, you have to add lean muscle and that means you need to do some type of strength training.
And if you don't like weights, how about resistance bands ? Resistance bands are a great way to strength train too.

Yeah, it is pretty much. Have you tried a class like body pump? It introduced me to ST and helped me get excited about it before I started setting strength goals for myself.
Everyone tells me that I look slim and look great and I am within my weight range. However, I feel flabby all over. I love to walk but absolutely hate strength training! Is strength training the only way to get rid of that flabby feeling? Just to let you know, I'm a female and age 58.
