Believe me, I totally understand this. This is way too few calories. Here are the signs I experience when I am undereating:

Cold (hands, feet, all over, even in the summer!)
Lack of interest in activities
Lethargy (dragging myself around to get anything done)
Quiet, withdrawn, not talking
Sometimes irritability and moodiness for no reason

A nutritionist asked me to bump my calories from 1600 to 1800, which completely freaked me out, but the scale immediately started to drop. Don't be afraid to eat. Keep your metabolism stoked with whole, healthy foods and it will repay you by dropping the bodyfat it no longer feels it needs to hold onto to survive.

Also, when you increase your calories do so at a slow rate, say maybe 100 calories a week. This will prevent your body from grabbing onto it and storing it as fat. Then enjoy watching the scale drop and feeling your pants fit differently!

I'm sure you've heard this before, but eating too few calories is going to hurt your weight loss efforts just as much as eating too many will. Also, eating below 1200 calories makes it very difficult to get all of the nutrients you need on a daily basis. So in addition to hurting your weight loss progress, it's also not good for your health.

For one you will find most if not all of the ppl on this site will say eat, eat, eat! The goal in life is to be healthy, but cutting calories like that is not healthy for anyone. I have had a hard time counting calories because it is so time comsuming. This year, I started my crusade end of October, eating healthy meals not exactly knowing how much and more importantly how they were proportioned. By Christmas I had widdled my nutrition enough and with all the extra work from the holidays, I got sick. After I recovered I made it my new committment to track my calories and THANK YOU SPARKPEOPLE.COM for helping me with it. I realized I was cutting back too much and I have a hard time getting enough protien everyday. My new strategy is to trick my body in thinking I am feeding it. Most days I eat about 1500 calories but a couple days a week I eat 1700. That way I get the extra calories I need and I don't feel like I am eating too much and at the end of the week I have consumed the correct amount of calories overall. Seems to be working ok. What's important is finding what works for you and if you are really having a hard time you could try baby steps. Make small changes you can live with until you are where you want to be. Like adding am and afternoon snacks would be a great idea so you are not overwhelmed by adding more calories to the meals you are already concerned about eating too much. On our news show they have a health doc that says you should eat every 3-4 hours. Hope these suggestions help. GOOD LUCK!!!! :)

I can understand this. The thing my nutritionist drilled into me after a faulty regime I adopted is that the body is akin to a machine. In order for it to be in good working order and carry out regular processes it needs fuel. One of those processes is losing weight. So really, you need to eat in order to lose and for weight loss to be successful.

I had a similar mentality to yours when I first started "dieting" and stayed, always, at 1200 calories or lower. I was afraid to go any higher. It worked for a little while and then I was stuck for months - not a single pound came off. I exercised more, became more strict thinking it was a plateau and I needed to push my way through it with force and discipline, and then got frustrated from having no results with all that effort and restriction. Eventually I went out to a restaurant to celebrate a friend's graduation and while I ate healthily, I ate more than I had in months. Two days later, two pounds were gone on the scale and they did not come back. I sort of learned my lesson after that and stopped being afraid about consuming 1500+ calories. Weight started coming off after half a year at 1200. Sometimes I'll still get stuck, and it isn't because I'm eating too much, but too little again.

While this is highly anecdotal, you need to find good balances and don't be deterred from actually eating and bouncing around your calorie range. Food is a helpful thing and keeps you functioning and healthy. You may still experience plateaus and this is normal (I had one last 8 months), but really the best success I've found is through not worrying about the results. By simply adopting good habits and enjoying the fact I was being healthy I got farther than the worrying and the restriction and the disappointment from the lack of rapid or consistent results.

I promise you won't gain 300lbs. Be well and good luck.

Well, my first reaction to your post is...what do you mean lower? If you have been eating lower than 1200 calories that could be your problem right there. You need to eat at LEAST 1200 calories every day otherwise your body goes into starvation mode and hangs on to every little calorie that it has because it doesn't know when it's going to get fed properly again. You need to eat enough food so that your body knows that it will get the right amount again in the future and it will stop hoarding them.

I know it sounds counterintuitive, but I found that when I started working out a lot more, I had to eat more too, I ate more and lost more weight, go figure. :) Keep it up, eat enough to stay healthy. :)

The other thing is that you could be on a plateau. I stayed at 144 for a year and never went any lower until randomly I stopped tracking my food and ate what I wanted for two months and dropped to have no idea. But the main thing is, eat at least 1200 calories and if you don't see results in a month or two, try upping it or changing your exercise around. Patience is they key.

I have been eating at 1200 or lower and have not lost a pound in forever!!!!!!! I have read a lot of similar posts and i am sorry if I am being repetitive but I need encouragement that this is the fuel my body needs and that i wont gain 300 lbs . Thanks for everyones time.
