So, based on the info you provided:
1/2 avocado = 150 cal 4 oz of grilled tri tip steak = 300 cal (this is a fatty cut of meat) 4 cups of mixed greens = 30 cal 3 tomato slices = 10 cal 50 grams cheddar cheese = 200 cal
This totals 690 calories. However, this is an estimate. Where did you find the weights of the ingredients? Did you call the restaurant? Also, was oil or butter used when cooking the steak? That would add calories.
I would call the restaurant, personally, if you really think the calories listed on their website is incorrect. They will very likely tell you how much of each item goes on this salad.

That is true about adding butter or oil in some places (I am a cook).
However, that is mainly reserved for whole steaks, filets, etc. so that it looks more appealing when presented on the plate next to a vegetable or potato.
It is more normal (and I am not saying it is impossible) however, that the piece of steak is cooked on the grill to the desired temperature, meanwhile the salad is being prepared. The steak is then cut and placed on top. In that situation, what is being shown is the doneness of the cut.
I'm just saying that as a professional cook, I've never experienced a cut up piece of meat to be placed on a salad to be oiled first. It's very unlikely. I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm just saying it's very unlikely.
Now, was oil used to cook the steak? That could very well have been.

I have learned to really read my facts. Panera sells a Low-Fat Vegetarian Black Bean Soup, and it is wonderful in fiber, protein and iron, but 900mg of sodium!! So it must be shipped to them in a can, or bag. Just because something saids healthy,it might Not be the best choice. Even subway promotes healthy sandwiches,but to me its again too much sodium in those processed meats. Read everything. Good Luck.
Was it the Southwest Steak Salad? SW salads often include tortilla chip strips and/or black bean salsa, both of which could add hundreds of calories. Were either of those ingredients on there?
I also agree with the other person that said steak often has "secret" ingredients like oil or butter.

Restaurants VERY often add butter or oil to steak after it's cooked, to make it look shiny and taste richer. That could add another 100 calories or more.

So let's say that they added up all the calories that should be on that plate. Perhaps what happened is that the kitchen put the plate together and scaled everything down just a bit. For example, in WW, we have a lot of portion size guessing and one rule of thumb is that a 3 oz portion of meat is the size of a pack of cards. A 4-oz portion is not going to be much bigger than that. A sprinkling of cheddar cheese is not going to be much. It's possible that they gave you something that is somewhat smaller than what they originally started serving.

If that's the case, then I'd say it was typo - and that's entirely possible.
The totals given previously sound correct, and if your measurements are on target (and you have been doing it for a while), then the only other explanation is that it is a typo.

yes, the info on their website specified the Total amount of calories for the salad & I deducted the amount of calories that are in the 2oz of dressing because they list the dressing separately as an available side dish.
second, the tri tip had one *tiny* piece of visible fat, perhaps equivalent to the tip of my little finger. yes, I realize avocado is a high fat food but other than the meat, that was the highest calorie food present. I'm not kidding when I say that the cheddar cheese was just a sprinkle and looked as if it were added to the salad to give it "eye appeal".
I've been weighing and measuring my food for about a year now, so I have a fairly good idea of amounts of what I'm eating.
and yes, the 4 oz of steak and all those greens were definitely filling; in fact, I only ate 1/2 at the Black Bear and ate the rest of it 2 hrs later at home.

First are you sure that the high calorie count did NOT include dressing?
Second, are you sure that the weights were exactly what you state for the salad (the tri-tip steak, for example). Avocado is pretty high in fat. Not criticizing the choice of avocado, just saying that fat is caloric, no matter what kind of 'healthy fat' it is. Cheddar Cheese is going to be a high-fat food, too. Also, was the tri-tip steak trimmed of all visible fat? It's going to contain a certain amount of fat anyway because it's meat, but some people like fat on their steak and restaurants can leave it on.
These were added to a salad because they are flavorful. Sounds like a full meal to me, when you consider the common calorie limit for a lot of diets is around 1600 calories.

the other day, I ate a salad at the Black Bear Diner & when I looked up the info on it, it said that *without* dressing, it came to a whopping 950+ cals.
I don't see how they could come up with that as the salad consisted of 4oz of grilled tri tip steak, at least 3 but not more than 4 cups of mixed greens, 1/2 of a small avocado, 3 extremely thin slices of tomato, and just enough cheddar cheese to act as a garnish.
I would have expected that high of a calorie level if I had used the 2 oz of dressing they provide but according to their website, that would have made the total calories come to about 1250 calories.
