I like kefir and have in the past found it helpful in digestion, but I don't have digestive issues anymore and just got out of the habit of drinking it.

I like yogurt once in a while, too.

OP, if I remember right, you've have (and maybe still have) bulimia issues. Neither probiotics nor prebiotics will do you any good if you're still abusing laxatives or vomiting, but as soon as you get that behavior stopped, ask your doctor. Probiotics aren't necessary for most people, but you have likely killed your natural intestinal flora, and the RIGHT probiotic might help. You must consult your doctor, though. Probiotics are bacteria. If you've damaged the intestinal lining, the wrong probiotic could be harmful. You need to consult a GI specialist who can analyse what you have and what you lack, and what intestinal injuries you might have.

Prebiotic is basically a fancy name for "foods with soluble fiber." Certain grains are primary, so you'll have to decide between prebiotics and the grain-free diet you were talking about in another thread. At 99 lbs, I'm willing to bet that your doctors don't want you to cut out ANY category of food, though, so look into prebiotic breads and cereals if only as a way to get yourself to eat more.

Well... I used to eat lots of yogurt and now I don't... but I don't feel much different... :S

GUDDIGO - Prebiotics are basically all the nutriments and stuff that PRObiotics (good bacteria and microorganisms) need to grow.

I want to try using probiotics and prebiotics.
What brand do you guys recommend? I have seen some prebiotic/probiotic/enzyme powders that you mix into drinks but I was thinking more of a pill form.

What has worked for you?

In my prev message I mentioned the GI profile. That also showed my allergies which were basically everything !! Soy, Eggs, Milk and dairy , gliadins. Was on an anti inflammatory diet for a period of time. Did wonders along with pre/probiotics. I use Almond milk. I have re-introduced eggs occasionally. I feel like a different person !!

For me, the probiotics are very helpful in keeping me healthy.....Activia yogurt is great!

Yes. Pre and probiotics keep your gastrointestinal flora balanced. I first used these products under an Md's advice. I was so unhealthy and had a number of problems. My MD recommended to get a GI profile, which showed major issues. I needed a plan of antibiotics and probiotics in between.(with prebiotics) Not only was my GI system unbalanced,my immune system was suppressed. I was sick ALL of the time,frequent resp infections. I have since learned that 70% of your immune system is basically centered around the healthiness of your gut. I have been using probiotics now for about 21 months, and today my health is much better than I can recall. Have had no resp infections in over a year. Used to get at least 2 per year which ALWAYS progressed to bronchitis. Am happy to say that I just had a common cold which I overcame !!! That hasn't happened in over 15 years.. It is worth it to have the test and pre/pro biotics. (testing if you have GI issues) I also used to have really bad reflux, which I have not experienced since treatment !!!!! emoticon

Check with a doctor if you are on certain medications, they can render medications USELESS!!! They are not magic and not something for just anyone to start taking, "natural" is meaningless in the world of advertising!

Prebiotics are similar to probiotics. According to Wikipedia, they aid your digestion and are found in foods like beans, Jerusalem artichokes and jicama.

doctors will usually tell you to take some after antibiotics as well or along with since antibiotics tend to disrupt digestive needs.

Lots of interesting information. For me probiotics meant eating yogurt....What are prebiotics?

I just got out of hospital and they gave me probiotics daily in my iv. I went to local drugstore and bought some to continue on. My Mother is also on them. They help you keep good
gut flora.

hi there! I use probiotics. I had very serious stomach issues that landed me in the hospital. I started taking a good quality probiotic and almost all my issues went away. Including stomach acid problems
it is hard to find one that works that is reasonably priced I get my Swainsons
