I really thought that I didn't post opposing opinions, but it turns out I do. Must be my evil twin taking over and posting in my place.

I haven't gotten emails accusing me of being too negative. Then again there is a first time for everything! LOL! Many of the threads where someone wants you to hold their hand and tell them what to eat. I generally roll my eyes and skip those. I think if they fail, they want to be able to blame someone. Besides themselves. (oooh did I just say that out loud?)

On another forum I visit someone posted a question: "What does everyone think of animal abuse?" After scores of replies about how awful and sickening it is I asked why he posted. Did he seriously think someone was going to defend animal abuse?
I sometimes enjoy stirring the pot and I get hate emails from people accusing me of being negative. If someone wants to target their post to like-minded people they should post in a SparkTeam instead of the general message board.

@Frick & Frack (aka Complexflavor and Rugbyguy): ur funny! When I don't know a word (even if the writer makes it obvious like Complex did) I STILL have to look it up for reassurance. :)

As for BDSM equipment: Shhhhhhhh.....this is a VANILLA ONLY cafe'. emoticon

lovepassionlife - you have a great sense of humor.

As to the original post, maybe, but I know in advance that my opinions are not popular. What I find interesting is that everyone else (those who oppose me) is entitled to their opinions, but I am not - I am just wrong. So much for equality!

@motivator: "discouraging others"? you saw a reply where someone was trying to discourage another from exercising?

That's sucks. And of course that's not what this thread is about. Thanks for drawing the distinction from the two.

I wonder why one can't have an opposing view that has benefited others. Instead they get deleted. An example is yoga.. I don't do yoga. So I don't go trying to discourage others from using it. The objective I thought was to motivate, inspire, and uplift people to a higher, healthier way of living

You know what's cool about Spark community in general? A lot of smaller boards have really airtight mentalities. Serious mob rule. There's a general trend here, of diet/exercise information, but it's still a lot more wide open than a lot of places, where snark prevails.

In response to the original post, no that never happens to me :-P

(See what I did there? Posted an opposing view to the idea that I post opposing views...paradox!)

I'm not on a lot because my schedule doesn't allow so I probably missed those. I have commented in the past about this topic. I am not "anti-water" by any means. I just find it silly the number of people I see working sedentary jobs in climate controlled environments that exercise in air-conditioned gyms for an hour a day and think they are chronically dehydrated. Or think it magically flushes "toxins" out of their systems or promotes significant fat loss. I understand that some people must be very conscious of fluid intake because of certain factors, just not most of us (myself included). Like you said, the research is just not there to support the claims. Amazing how an entire population can become dehydrated and inherit defective thirst mechanisms in a matter of a decade. The marketing consultants for these bottled water companies are just plain brilliant!

Armsports, water drinking is one of the perennial topics here. Once in awhile I post my opinion, which sounds like yours, and this year only one person has ever agreed, despite recent articles and studies that support us.

Where have you been?

Honestly, I kinda like the benign atmosphere of SparkPeople Cafe. I'm here to just keep myself on track and somehow a quick check-in on this board fits in with that. I'm not here to debate or engage in a heated conversation. If others want to, I don't mind. If it's not something that interests me I'll just stay out of it.

Usually if I do respond it's because I feel like I want to join in offering support to other users. Even one word and short responses -- like "hell yes I eat breakfast!" - can do that.

That's all!

Cheers.

For those people stuck spending time on Sparkpeople because your workplace blocks the sites where you'd rather be, have you tried emailing (from home) the link to the preferred sites to yourself, so you can open it at work?

Beats trying to change Sparkpeople, no?

What gets me are all the people that just blindly follow some of these so-called nutrition and fitness "mantras" just because they read it in a book or saw it on the internet. C'mon people give it all little thought with a side of common sense. Love to see a board with a little more of that theme on health-related topics. My first post will be about all these folks drinking a gallon of water a day because they think they are dehydrated lol.

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon I agree with Yellowdalhia about liking discussions that are controversial. There's a fine line where it becomes confrontational or snarky.

Some of yall could start a new team for that, NOT geared to the racier topics (like NTOL), just the usual stuff, especially nutrition and fitness. Maybe a new message board, with a name making clear it's for these discussions. Gotta play nice in the Cafe - I don't think that's a bad thing.

I've been cruising through here long enough, I think I can answer Yellowdalhia. All those bland threads you don't like are there for others, who do like them, for Sparkpoints or whatever it is about clicking and posting something.

For some, who've never posted anywhere, Sparkpeople is non-intimidating. The idea is, they can be part of a community to help them reach their goals. That's what an expert said on here before.

In googling all kinds of topics, I have seen countless message boards where snarkiness rules. It's not hard to find them if that's what you enjoy. Even on topics that your workplace won't ban, so if you have time to be online you should be able to find some that fit what you're looking for.

On Sparkpeople, you have to find teams that are geared the way you like. I understand the reason for keeping the Cafe only emoticon 's and emoticon 's. People can feel free to post here without having to fear an ambush.

There's a Soapbox team, but I'm out of date.

I haven't "stirred the pot" for a very long time...mostly because by the time I come across a controversial thread someone has already beat me to it.

I love it when people "butt heads on the threads." Controversy is a good thing and if you're going to post you need to be open to every response whether you like it or not.

No, if I click on a thread that is mindless dribble, I just leave it. We seem to have a lot of that lately. If I do have an opposing opinion, I can get a little fired up. I can't stand the one word drive by threads. I have landed myself in hot water many times for being to opinionated .

For Sparkpeople it has been my experience that a certain "moral & matching political group" lord over the boards thumping us heathens every now & again with that darn "Report Inappropiate thread" button a.k.a. "Report Heathen" button.

@complex, if we are not friends already I may just have to friend you after that. You and I would get along famously and may even have some interesting conversations. I very much follow the rule of if you don't have anything useful to say then don't say anything at all.

As for other forums. I was actually kicked off of an entire community by one board because they didn't like me. Literally. I went over there and basically threw down the gauntlet of the women who thought they ran the show (the community is babycenter of all places, the board is the Bargain Hunters board). I am a very confident woman and went over there since their posts are basically mindless dribble which makes for some easy conversating. Well, they didn't appreciate that I was willing to stand up to them in many posts and they liked it even less that I was very self confident. They marked me as "disturbing the community" and I was given the boot.

Needless to say I am back with a new screen name and haven't taken the time to participate in their useless threads. I am now focused on political debate for this election year. :) If you are bored come by and visit.
community.babycenter.com my user name is Wicked_Queen :)

On a message board that I used to LIVE at, I earned the title "One Woman Jihad". The admin put it under my avatar, for me, wasn't that nice. 17,000+ posts, and mostly they were abrasive.

I come here, and I'm like "Leave those days behind, Complex. You're a grownup, act like one." I try emoticon

I don't like vapid posts, though. I think because of the point system, people just leave a few superficial words, without really reading the OP, or caring about the subject.
Or, some people just have to talk, even if they're not really saying anything useful.

I LOATHE posters like that. Why even bother posting some assinine comment when you either won't or can't back it up??? I mean really, the whole point of debating it is to state an opinion and then back that opinion up throughout the discussion.

I just take it that they lack the intelligence to stand by what they say and keep the discussion going.

My husband has said multiple times that when I comment it is usually to "stir the pot". I am just a very opinionated woman though. Don't ask my opinion on a hot topic issue and don't post something that can be controversial if you don't want to hear what I have to say.

Oh and I always defend my viewpoints regardless if people agree with me or not. I back my stuff up with fact and sources. :) I love debating.

I have definitely posted replies to "stir things up" in the past. I love a good debate. And sometimes, if I see a lot of similar replies on a topic, I'll post an opposing view to try and generate some more detailed responses.

KJFITNESSDUDE

Have you ever clicked on a thread (here or anywhere) only to realize that every single reply is filled with sickly sweeter-than-sweet mindless drivel and you just HAVE-TO post an opposing view and/or remark?

I am certainly guilty of this but have been TRYING very hard to resist this amusing practice.

The other kind of reply that I try very hard to not do is the "There are worse things in the world to worry about" or "don't sweat the small stuff" type replies. When I post those kinds of reply I am DEFINITELY trying to rise myself above all other posts by taking what seems like the "high road".
