I'm trying to to cut a lot of the processed junk out of my diet ... It's very difficult!

recovering sugar addict here, I wouldn't go out of my way to find sweet substitutes, just try a variety of things but dried fruits and fresh fruits are good substitutes.

I've dropped the processed foods for about 10 weeks now. After the first couple of weeks (which were rough going, I won't lie), it felt like my taste buds came back to life, and real food just started tasting so much brighter to me.

My advice would be to avoid artificial sweeteners (sugar free fudgsicles, diet soda, etc.) so that you can lose the taste for sweet foods.

A deliciously sweet meal I've been enjoying lately is a salad comprised of baby spinach, strawberries, feta cheese, and red onions. I top it off with a homemade dressing of lemon juice and olive oil. I can't get enough of of this salad; I eat it on its own for lunch and with some chicken or steak for dinner. So good.

Also, roasting vegetables will bring out their natural sweetness. Brussels sprouts probably don't top anyone's list of favorites, but when I roast them with olive oil and a bit of kosher salt, even my 8-year-old can't get enough of them. Same for asparagus; I love it steamed but it's even better roasted. I also make a combo of roast veggies: eggplant, red pepper, red onion, and mushrooms. So delicious. If you're looking for a dip, you can also mix that combo up with some cream cheese (use a food processor). Heavenly.

I think green beans taste sweet,as do onions. Most vegetables, fruit, cheese etc has sugar in it. You just can't taste it, because your body has been overloaded with tons of it. Same as salt. I don't salt my food. I use black pepper, and garlic powder. Many foods have a lot of salt naturally, especially meats. Finding foods without salt or sugar is harder than finding real, fresh food.

I start by looking at the ingredients list. If it has 1 ingredient.. that is Even better if it doesn't have an ingredients list. If it does, read the sodium, or sugar quantity X # of servings. Check all the brands. You will be amazed at the variances.

I tend to eat meat, vegetables, eggs, oil, and butter, and 1 fruit a day. The fruit is nature's dessert. You can also eat a lot more fresh vegetables. No reason not to have 10-12 servings.

If you have a favorite packaged food, look at the ingredients, and ask yourself if you can make it by combining the separate items that are on the list, minus the scientific terms. The packaging and preservatives are there so they can stay on a shelf for 6-8 weeks and not spoil. You probably don't need it to last for more than a week, so no need for those things.

In 2-3 weeks, you will begin to actually taste the food you eat.

Ditto to the previous post. I even find spinach tasting sweet to me now.
Have you ever tried stevia?

Once you remove sweetened processed foods from your diet it doesn't take long for your tastebuds to adapt. Fruit becomes so deliciously sweet the need for cakes and candies seems to disapear as they become too sweet to enjoy. Salmon tastes sweet to me now and plain yogurt. A square or two of 80% dark chocolate is the perfect end to a meal.
