Yeah - I think he is unhappy about his weight! No seriously I'm sure that some of the things that happened to him in the past caused him to eat. He has epilepsy which effected him as a child, and he had some issues with his parents. However that was such a long time ago. Now I think that it's a cycle...he's unhappy about being unhealthy, walking with a cane, getting old and being heavy...so he's in pain a lot and when you are in pain you look for sources of pleasure...he can't get the pleasure from active things so he looks to food which starts the cycle all over again,,,He did well with a nutrition coach years ago. Should I encourage him to try again??

Oh No KYM! New High Calorie Orleans! People from Tx go there for eating vacations. Just kidding. You will do great here at SP with such a fantastic program and community support in spite of the food culture you are surrounded by. Think: shrimp, crayfish, and okra without all the butter etc. added.

I know: All you people in Florida and in any other state that does not touch the Gulf of Mexico are saying: What the heck is Okra? I get asked that in grocery stores when the northern transplants see the stuff on the shelf.

It's great you have his support! That will be a big help.

Do you drink much water? We think that's a real good starting goal for weight loss and other kinds of personal improvement.

One thing you might want to do is start a discussion on the "SparkPeople Stars" board. We're going to change the name of that to "SparkLog" and ask anyone to use it as a running log of their goal progress so we can cheer successes and support people during "step backs".

to cdownie: my husband is supportive of my plan, and whatever I do, whatever I weigh, he loves me. but I don't love me at this weight - so we will see how this plan goes...i will keep you posted (literally!!)

to mike: eating IS a pleasure, but if your Dad overeats, it becomes self-destructive. i know from experience - we have the "fat gene" in my family and my Dad is also overweight and a compulsive eater. it is a tough nut to crack. Do you think your Dad is unhappy (about something other than his weight)??

This is for life...being obese is tough. I've watched my dad struggle with this his whole life. He's overweight and always boomerangs...each time it gets worse and it's tougher for him to dig out of the whole. I don't know what to do as food really is a great source of pleasure for him???

Welcome from New Orleans. We're located in Cincinnati - another city not known for being very healthy.

Slowly but surely you can start a new trend in New Orleans :)

PS Thanks for posting to other boards already too! Before you know it, you'll be sharing your success with others and helping them reach their goals :)

The issue with your husband will be a tough one. Is he supportive of your goals? That would really help.

Hi Kymmie - welcome to SparkPeople!

And welcome to the world of chatting! Where are you from?

A recent well-regarded study showed that online sites with a lot of support (message boards, chat, etc.) really do help people lose more weight. So we hope to see you around.

Let us know if you have any questions about SparkPeople!

this is day 2 of Spark for me - trying to lose 45 lbs by Christmas! i lost 75 lbs in about a year approx. 9 years ago - kept it off for about 5 years but gained most of it back over the past 4 years. i am hoping that if i stick to the regimine of recording my food in take every day, do my workouts, then i will be successful.
