My cholesterol had been high for years, even while on medication for it and eating a very healthy diet with very little processed food or unhealthy fats. What actually lowered it was losing weight. I lost 50lb before the bloods came back normal, except for the HDL which continued to be too low.

Best wishes go to you for reaching a healthy range!

You also want to know what all your numbers are. For example is your HDL low or high? Are your triglycerides high, low, borderline? If your HDL is high and your triglycerides are low, you might actually not have much to worry about.

Some easy things you can do:

Reduce or eliminate sugar and refined carbs
Reduce red meat and increase fish
Eat more fiber and veggies
Exercise
Take a fish oil supplement.

Do you have a family history of high cholesterol?
what is the ratio of omega 3 to omega 6 fats in your diet?
How much exercise are you getting daily?

Exercise and overall weight loss will cause a decrease in cholesterol. You don't have to move mountains, even small changes help. Eating a high-fiber diet, and eating foods rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids like olive oil and nuts also helps. Avoid saturated fat, and really avoid trans fats. It may not sound like a tasty lifestyle if you're not used to it, but it actually is.

I don't know too much about what is best to do in terms of diet, but I do know that making common-sense changes (such as "eating healthy" instead of eating crud), getting some exercise, and losing weight should on their own make a big difference.

My LDL is borderline too. The main changes I made recently are:

Increase my fiber (lowers LDL)
Reduce saturated fats, stay away from trans fats (Lowers LDL)
Walk every day (Raises HDL, which also helps lower LDL).

If you look under the health concerns articles here on SparkPeople, there is some information.
