I just came across this board and thread. I have been looking for something that I can use in place of the Elliptical machine I have downstairs and honestly never thought about jumping rope! We used to do it all the time in school. Thanks for the tips everyone!

the ceiling in my apartment is one of those stucco type I-don't-know-what-it's-called-but-there-s- gotta-be-a-name-for-it type of ceilings.. being so tall, I'm always worried about the jump rope scraping the ceiling and getting covered in the crud. It hasn't happened but I can't tell how much clearance there is from the top range of the rope to the ceiling. Probably not a lot.... just another stress point to add to jumping at just the right time, every time!

It is great exercise if you are can do it but my soreness from it comes from ankle burns and scrapped knees.

I just had to pipe in. This makes me want to pick up my jump rope every time: it's Ali training in 1974.
Alright, it's been just over a month now that I've been regularly using the jump rope in my morning workouts.
I have to say that I still suck at it... but, I do a better job without running shoes...for some reason I get tripped up in the rope way more often when I have my running shoes on... but when I jump rope either barefoot or with socks on then sometimes later my feet hurt!
It's improving slowly, I still really enjoy it - but it's much harder than it appears.

It's been years since I've jumped but tis a good time to get back into it. Good ab and leg burner.
two weeks into jumping da rope and I'm comfortable with it now...mostly. still get tripped up every so often. Mostly I just need to work on improving endurance with it. Still enjoying it. I believe it's the most benefit for lowest cost for exercising, so that's good!
Well I've completed my first week of working with the jump rope... Gotta say by the end of the week I was more comfortable with it and less likely to trip myself.
I enjoy it - sure does get the heart going - and sure is safer than running outside here in the Canadian winter.
Looking forward to starting my second week tomorrow morning!

Yes I too have started Jump Rope. YouTube is great for technique. I also read a Free eBook on Amazon that is good for the beginner as it details types of rope and how to use them for differnt intensities and outcomes i.e. fitness or weight loss. The book is called 'How to Skip Like a Boxer'. I only Skip twice a week as it is too intense for me at this stage! And use it as an interval training (a bit like boxing rounds) to maximise weight loss and more impotantly save time! The best thing is I can do it at home and take the rope with me anywhere which is useful when I work away occassionally. Bought a jump rope yesterday and tried to use it last night just for a minute. I could feel my muscles hurting already. Jumping rope is going to be a great exercise for me if I don't hurt myself too much.
The internet strikes again. Here's a video I just found on how to use a jump rope. The beginning part is useful in that it shows the "snick-THUMP" thing I was talking about in a previous post. As in, when to turn the rope to coordinate with your jump.
Although I'm a munchkin, I inhabit the land of giants and amazons, many of whom have gotten the hang of it.
The dance teacher who used to make us do the skipping drills was a giant German man. In my (very) highest heeled tap shoes, I barely grazed his shoulder, so the dude was TALL. He could do all sorts of crazy rapid-fire jumps, including turning the rope over twice while just sort of levitating. I've never been able to master that one, but I have a nice stage-shaped dent in my shin from where I kept trying.
There is a knack to jumping rope. My dance teacher used to make us jump rope to develop precision with foot movements as well as to keep up our cardio levels.
If you're having trouble stringing together more than 10 to 20 jumps in a row, check the following:
1) Your rope might be too light. What's it made of? Does it have handles with those little loop-thingies that allow the rope to turn freely? Is it proper rope, or lightweight plastic?
One of the best jump ropes I ever had was rope covered with small plastic tubes (like those spoke thingies that we all used to put on bike tires when we were little). If you missed, the plastic would clip your toes and hurt like blazes. I learned accuracy pretty quickly out of self preservation.
2) Turning rhythm. The rhythm is critical. If you have a rope long enough to brush the floor when you're jumping, listen for that sound. You should jump at that point, because the rope is just in front of your feet. It's sort of a snick-THUMP sound, with the "snick" being the rope hitting the floor, and the "THUMP" being your toes hitting the floor.
3) Speed. Go too slowly and you'll trip yourself up. Too quickly, same thing. Find a pace that works for you, and then speed up as you get more comfortable.
Then if you're inclined, you can start getting into the twinkle-toes fancy footwork, which increases the cardio levels even more.
That's good to know - part of my motivation behind getting the jump rope was to keep the cardio up for running outside again once the weather gets nice. Right now there's so much snow the city hasn't done a good job of recovering the sidewalks... so walking is tough let alone running!
Starting on the jump rope Wednesday, until then I'm still busy eating, drinking and being merry!
Just read in a book by a physical therapist that jumping rope is one of the best exercises a runner can do. Keeps the cardio up while you are jumping. Since running is a series of jumps it is supposed to be really good for runners. I'm planning to start jumping soon. Hope my lack of coordination doesn't embarrass me too much at the gym.

I started jumping rope earlier this year before spraining my ankle getting of a tread mill. ( she was worth the look) just picked it up again after thanksgiving and I can only string together about 50 jumps before missing but it gets my heart rate to max in a very shot time - less than10 min
I bought a jump rope last night at WalMart when I was out doing some shopping. Haven't used it yet as there was a bunch of things to get done last night. I'll post more once I've had a chance to spend some time trying it out.
I did make sure to get one that was long enough for my height, so no risk of killing myself with it. Although I'm sure many would be disappointed with that... haha

I used a jumprope for awhile. It was a hell of a workout, but I got really bored with it. I can understand your situation though. I'd probably rather jump rope and be bored than be outside in Canada in the winter. hahaha.
Is anyone here using a jump rope as part of their cardio routines?
I live in Canada, and running outside in the winter to me is not something I want to do, so I'm looking at ways of maintining cardio levels inside. I don't currently own a treadmill or exercise bike but I'm interested in jump rope because it's CHEAP...
