Hi, I'm a physician and med school professor. I could not help replying to this. The idea that popcorn makes diverticulitis worse has actually been proven WRONG by a recent study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The study looked at over 47,000 health professionals. During 18 years of follow-up, there were 801 cases of diverticulitis diagnosed and 383 cases of diverticular bleeding.
To summarize:
"Men who ate nuts, corn, or popcorn frequently were found to have no greater risk for developing diverticulitis or diverticular bleeding than men who rarely ate the foods. In fact, men who ate nuts at least twice a week had a 20% lower risk of diverticulitis than men who ate nuts less than once a month; men who ate popcorn at least twice a week had a 28% lower risk."

Why did we tell people not to eat popcorn? Actually, NO REASON! It just seemed like good advice, the idea being that popcorn and nuts and such might get stuck in the diverticulae (little pouches that form in the colon wall) and cause trouble. But no one ever actually tested to see if was true or not. News like this takes a while to get around, so your friend's doctor may not have heard this yet -- there's just too much going on in medicine all the time to keep up with everything!

Too much of anything is bad for you, really. I doubt that having a bag of popcorn several days in a row is going to cause you any real problems (and the microwave bags generally have 7+ cups each). That said, if you experience discomfort, then you may have overdone it. It's not going to hamper your weight loss efforts or cause you any real damage, but you have to do what works for your body, personally.

perhaps. i just love the stuff! although last night was my 5th night in a row eating popcorn- i noticed today i got full very quickly with all of my meals, and i wasn't all that hungry over all (normally im starving!!).
maybe my friend is right- popcorn is screwy for the digestive system!!

I don't know about eating too much...but it does have a good bit of fiber in it so that's probably why you have been feeling bloated and what not.

my friend has diverticulus (i may have spelt that wrong) and i know SHE can't eat popcorn, but she came over last night as i was eating my normal nightly snack and she told me I shouldn't eat too much of it either.
i love popcorn! ive been having at least 5 cups of the stuff for the past couple of days. i do wake up sort of full/bloated in the morning...
is too much popcorn bad for the intestines/digestion even for people without diverticulus?
