Just as a balance to the earlier comments, I didn't mind paying for the app. I use an ad blocker on the main site because the moving ads make my eyes go funny! so they don't make anything out of me that way but I'm happy to support SP by buying things like the Spark book and this app. But you don't get anything on the app that isn't on the main site so if the price bothers you then you really don't have to buy it.
We started charging for our mobile tracking apps because they require significant resources to build & maintain, but do not provide much revenue via ads (and we have to make money so that we can stay in business and support our free products)! The site is still 100% free and so is our mobile site that can be accessed on your phone's web browser.
Nope. This IS a free site. And you do not need to buy the app. You can access the FREE site via the web.

Yes, this is disappointing. This is supposed to be a free site. Is it just turning into another community that lures you in with promises of free services only to charge you for every little thing? Weight control is a HEALTH issue. It's always been a disappointment to me that money is being made from this. :( I feel ya.

I just found out that the apps for smartphones now cost $3.99. If I have an iPad and iPhone, is it $3.99 each? I find this terribly disappointing, especially since these apps are sub-par...
