Well I finally got an answer when I reported this question on 'what's up at sparkpeople'.
Apparently the new app is more stable ( I have been having issues with it always wanting me to log in), You can spin the log-in wheel in the app, read articles/get Sparkpoints for reading articles and view SparkPoints/Fitness Minutes Leaderboards.
Also the new one will get updates while the old one will not anymore. As it is easier to use an app then going through web browser( for convenience sake) I will update to new one.

I have the old version as well. Would be interested in knowing the difference. I have it on my iphone and ipad. Sure don't want to have to pay twice if there aren't any differences

Interested in any replies you get. I have the old version too, and wondering if it's worth it to switch.

I seem to have an old version of the iPhone app and was just wondering if anybody has had that and has changed to the newer one. Old one was free n new one has a charge which is fine but how different from each other are they? I currently use mapmywalk app but GPS function on sparkpeople app sounds easier than using two seperate apps
