I found a protein shake that I absolutely love and have it a few mornings a week for breakfast. It's called Whey Cool Chocolate protein shake from Designs for Health. It's all organic and the whey is from grass-fed, antibiotic/hormone free cows. I mix it with organic almond or coconut milk, and also add a tablespoon or chia seeds, and 2 tablespoons of ground flax seeds, and mix it in a blender bottle. This also satisfies my chocolate craving for the day, which helps. On the mornings I don't have a shake, I have two organic scrambled eggs, with peppers, onions, and zucchini. Or, oatmeal with walnuts, and blueberries. I feel I get a pretty good variety, even though I do try to limit my choices.

You can lose weight and control blood sugar levels with or without the use of diet and lowfat foods, such as: diet drinks, artificial sweeteners, low fat sour cream, low fat yogut, etc.

The choice is yours.

These foods are safe to use and for many it is a way to cut calories, fat, and carbohydrates. They like to use them. It would be inaccurate to report that these type foods are harming ones weight loss or blood sugar control. Just wanting to clarify some information in this thread.

DIETITIANBECKY, I did make an appointment for that with Kaiser, by the time they had a class available in my area I had already lost 30lbs. I still went and I did learn a few new things but they do recomend lots of sugar/fat free stuff that I will not do. I'm going to try harder to keep track of what I eat, it's very hard!

It would be helpful if you did start tracking your foods daily---on a regular basis.
You may also want to make your nutrition tracker public, for then we can give more helpful tips. Let me know if you need the steps to do this.

Many doctors are now referring patients with pre-diabetes for diet education. Have you worked with a dietitian or certified diabetes educator on an eating plan??

ALORTA, I so agree with you. I don't do any fat free, sugar free anything, the only thing I look for is items that are low carb. I instead practice small portions. One of my weekness in coca cola so I do allow my self to have one on the weekend and I enjoy it even more! And I try to do all fresh products, no carton or can but I do use frozen on some items. I do not like yolk on a hard boiled egg if I make my eggs any other way the yolk is fine but not hard boiled, yuck! I also forgot to mention that my after lunch snack is (most of the time) 10 whole almonds and I also eat avocado at least twice a week, so I think I may be getting the right amount of fat and protein that my body needs, I think.......

NINERIN, you are right, I didn't say the portions. It's just like the same amount I would use for a salad, it makes about 20 oz, the difference is that I don't put any ham, chicken etc. on the shake but I rarely do on a salad either. Thanks

P.S. I forgot to say, I plan on making my green shakes when I don't have time to prepare a healthy lunch. I work full time and go to the gym everyday, and have a young child. I alternate with soups but soups are time consuming and I don't like re-heated food :(

the thing about it is that unless you're actually tracking how much you are eating, you won't know how healthy it is. healthy, at least in my opinion is getting all the nutrients you need in. and there is a big difference between a single leaf of spinach and a cup of spinach or three cups of spinach. same for berries. three berries are not half a cup of berries are not three cups. and salmon, how much of it did you have? an ounce? a pound? three ounce? six? it's about quantity as well. and based on that list, without the quantities of what you ate and the ranges you should be eating in, we just don't know.

making your diet monotone isn't that great a thing.
Yes, it will make you eat less (since you get tired of the taste, or at least that's my experience), but its *very* easy to not meet your nutritional needs. If you, say, have (next to) no protein one day, not a big deal; maybe you've eaten more than you needed yesterday, or maybe you feel like making broiled steak tomorrow. Same with different vitamins, minerals, etc.
BUT, if you're consistently low on X, that will eventually show up.
I'm also a big advocate (in life, though haven't really spoken up about it on this site much) of whole foods... if you're going to have an egg, have an egg! Like Pookie mentioned, the yolks have a lot of benefits (though they got a bad rep thanks to marketing and those terrible 'just whites' cartons n' such).
Even unhealthy stuff, if you want say, a soda (not advocating you stock up on this junk, but if you can't stand NOT having one once a month or whatever)... have a coke. Not a diet, not a zero, etc. Have a Coke. Besides the caloric difference, you're harming your body in more ways with a diet than a regular... not to mention diet sodas (anything artificially sweetened that has very few or no calories, actually) only makes you hungry... so you'll put those calories in anyway (if not more).
Try to generally make healthy choices, and eat according to what your body is telling you it needs while staying in your caloric range. ENJOY what you eat, or you'll never be willing to keep with it.
Can you say you want to eat the stuff you mentioned for a month? A year?

I don't like the yolk, that's why I don't eat it. I'm really bad at tracking my meals, I did use some olive oil on my veggies with my dinner and I thought that with the salmon would have been enough of everything.
I will try harded and try tracking. I want to lose weight but mostly I want to be healthy. Thank you for the great replies

Are you tracking the calories and nutrition for this?

Your food tracker will tell you if you are meeting protein and fat needs, if you eat enough fibre and carbs.

I doubt you ate enough fat in there, the yolks of eggs are really nutritious as well, you missed out loads of health giving minerals by not eating them and the fat helps you feel full. There is nothing wrong with eating egg yolk.

If you haven't tracked it, try it, and see where you need to correct things.

When you track that where are you relative to your ranges? That is the more important thing.

I am so tired of not knowing what to eat, I eat pretty much the same thing all the time, lots of salads but it's really cold and I don't want a salad so I came up with the green shakes.
I have a shake with spinach, pineapple, celery and mixed berries for breakfast, about an hour later I have coffee with 3 crackers, snack 2 hard boil eggs (whites only) I alternate the eggs with low carb yogurt.
For lunch I have another green shake with spinach, zucchini, tomato, celery, cucumber, pineapple and a little (maybe 2 bites) of banana, and for dinner I had salmon with mixed veggies.
I started yesterday and today the same thing but I will have something else for dinner.
Does this sound healthy to you?
I am pre-diabetic and I want to beat this so badly!
