Get the grocery flyers a day or two before you shop, see what's on special, and plan your meals around that. We always tend to plan around the "protein," but it's usually more cost-effective to plan around the produce.
I live 140 miles from the nearest supermarket with a produce department (there's a little grocery 50 miles away that has a few fruits and veggies most of the time) and 240 miles from the nearest big chain supermarket. I couldn't live here if it weren't for frozen produce and long-storing ones like cabbage, leeks, carrots, apples, citrus, and so on. When you live in a remote area, you're just not going to get cheap fresh berries and lettuce all the time. That doesn't mean you can't eat healthy; you just have to plan more.

I'd have to say I agree with the frozen fruit/ veg-- stock up on the ones you like, when they're on sale, and buy fresh only when they're on sale. The frozen stuff is sometimes actually "fresher" than most of what's in the produce section at the store. All that stuff has been picked (sometimes before it's even really ripe) and trucked around, sometimes hundreds if not thousands of miles. Whereas frozen are flash frozen within hours of being picked. Canned fruit/veg are an option too. You can get fruit packed in juice and not sugar syrup, and veg with no salt added (or rinse the regular ones in cold water, it removes up to 40% of the sodium).

IMO, your health is top priority. I would seek out sales, buy frozen when it's cheaper, cut out all processed items, research "indoor gardening". Other possible helpers: -drive less, walk/bike places, carpool -cut out cable tv -cut back on your cell phone plan

Frozen vegetables and fruits are going to be your best option, as well as shopping for things that are seasonal (squash is good this time of year as well as apples).
Spark has an article about the 10 most commonly contaminated foods that are worth buying organic- beyond that you can supplement with non-organic produce (if you wash really well you should be fine- you can peel them as well). Remember that frozen have great nutrition still, so you can stock up when those are on sale!
Hi. I amlookinng for some advice.... I live way up north where our organic fruits and veggies are limited ,especially in winter.... actually all our fresh food is very limited and insanely expensive all year. Organic is through the roof. any ideas how I can consume te required amount of fresh fruits and vegs into my daily diet... all suggestions are appreciated!!
