I admit I've never been a soda fan, but find iced tea and water satisfy me. I don't put sugar in it, or use green tea, nor do I buy it--who needs the preservatives, slightly chemical flavor and the cost? Iced tea is so cheap that paying for it is cheating yourself of great taste and freshness! For a gallon of iced tea, I use about 8 bags of Red Rose black tea and throw in either an herbal mint tea or a mint-flavored black tea bag. Put them in a bowl or giant cup, pour boiling water over them, and let them brew about 3 minutes. Almost fill your container with cold water, then pour in the brew and stir. With an orange slice, you get a little natural sweetness, or a lime or lemon slice give an additional flavor without sweetness. There are so many flavored teas out there that can provide a change--pomegranate? check. Raspberry? check. Even chocolate mint! (I'll admit I haven't tried that for iced tea). When I see how hard it is to give up soda, I am always grateful for never having had it. I have had a glass of ginger ale once in a blue moon, but I have never felt a need for soda. Maybe because as kids we never even knew it existed. I think you are going about it the smart way and I wish you luck.
I do something similar, RDEPASS. I gave up full-calorie soda years ago, but I've always been a huge fan of the diet stuff. I still have it sometimes, but as long as I'm getting lots of water first and not drinking much soda, it doesn't have any negative effects on me.

Good for you Rdepass! I think that's a great way to approach it. I hardly ever drink soda because I don't want the sodium, but I'm going to use your strategy in other ways. You're a smart cookie!

I drink large glasses of water, but I still drink the diet coke. It is hard to quit that habit for me. I am still trying to give it up, but I need it most of the time.

I switched from regular to diet soda at first. That helped to satisfy the craving with fewer calories. Then, I too started paying attention to my water intake. I was so full from all of the water that I'd have no room for diet soda. I still splurge every now and again, but I don't crave it the way I used to.

I had a hard time giving up that daily soda - but what worked for me wasn't making it taboo - instead I told myself I could have a soda after I had at least 8 cups of water - it didn't take me long to give it up entirely - now I actually prefer water - it's thirst quenching unlike the soda which actually made me more thirsty when I finally paid attention.
