Both...I go to the gym to use equipment that I don't want cluttering my home and while I am away from the gym, I workout at home and at work (I am a private caregiver so it is a physically demanding job).
I've been thinking about the gym, but with two big dogs to walk everyday I don't think I need the gym that much but, It just might be motivation that I need instead of spending $20.00 a month. Debating, perhaps it's because I pass the gym everyday when I walk the dogs and the monthly fee is right there, enticing a person to go in and join.

I used to take a Zumba class, which I loved but it took up so much of my time and money was a consideration as well. I now have several workout DVDs that I enjoy at home, and I love the flexibility of doing them whenever works for me, and the variety helps me not to get bored.

It depends on the weather and how I'm feeling. Either way I will work out, but when I stay home I'll do some Tai Chi and then dance from of playlist of line dances that I made (cardio) and end it with some stretches and cool downs.
I workout at home or outside in the warmer months (biking, walking). I have many workout dvds/equipment that I've collected over the last few years and I find them to be very effective, and a much cheaper/easier alternative to going to a gym (esp. with my work schedule/budget). On top of that, I'm not much of a gym type. I'd be fun if I had people to go with, but I'd feel weird going alone and having strangers watch me. However as others have said, I wouldn't mind maybe doing an aerobic/dance class, just for the social aspect of it (would help me to get out of the house a bit). But even with that, I'd rather do that at some dance studio for 4 - 6 weeks and pay a one-time fee, than paying $40 a month at a gym, not knowing if I'd actually go enough to make it worthwhile. Boyfriend and I also thought about taking a karate class together.

I work out at the gym but I am looking at working out from home very soon! Am tired of the gym atmosphere!
I'm doing both. I love going to the gym because you have other people supporting you and pushing you to do more! On days that I can't go to the gym, I have workout dvd's that I can do at home so I never miss a workout!:)
I work out at home. The nearest gym is about 20 miles away, so it's not very convenient. When I do go to town, I have enough other shopping and errands to do that I don't feel like taking another hour or so to work out.
I'm lucky that I have a dedicated exercise room with plenty of equipment, though I mostly do DVD workouts or walk outside. I also do weights sometimes in the evenings while watching tv.
I have been working out at home for over the last year. I recently added some boot camp classes to the mix. I get bored plus I just got more living room furniture so the space I used to have for dvd workouts is non existent. My plan is to check out a few gyms close to my house...I need the social exposure.
Toreishi042 - The "right" gym is so important - that is why I have been having a hard time choosing the one that will be right for me. If you go to a gym, it has to be one that you are comfortable with going to on a regular basis.

Money was a concern for me, and, like Annemargar, I just moved to a new city and was gymless.
I was working out with dumbells and DVDs at home - alone. I haven't found work yet, and left my social circle - so, seriously, just being at home alone 24/7 was not a (mentally) healthy thing I was doing.
I finally joined a gym last week, after trying a different gym on a free pass. I didn't like the cheaper gym (poor atmosphere for me - serious body-builder women and men, in a basement, never washed the spider webs off the front door, kinda run down machines). For a little bit more expense, I joined a big chain gym, that is bright, has lots of good machines, friendly staff.
It's healthy, and I get out a bit, and they offer yoga and pilates, etc in the membership.
I have always worked out at the gym, but since my move to a new city, I have been without a gym. I have been working out at home - treadmill and a few weights. It is just not the same for me - I feel I don't get the same intensity in my workout. I am also getting bored with the same old weight exercises -- without the machines. Good news....I am going to join the neighborhood gym today :)
I am the absolute worst at exercising at home, since that is where I work and my to-do list never ends. I hold at-home exercisers in the highest regard since I become so distracted that I can't get it finished!! There is always cleaning, cooking, paperwork, laundry, and more to be done,and it is my job!
All I need to get in a workout is head out the door. My bike is ready by the garage, and with jogging shoes on I can jog, or walk if needed.
The gym is one of my favorite places since there I can do yoga, aerobics, pilates, strength training, ballet, swimming, racket ball, and more. I do some solo, and some in classes. I have been on a master's swim team and also taught water aerobics.

At this time and place in life, I do best in going to the gym to do whatever. I find it more difficult to get rolling along with any consistency from my home base.
I do not like working out in front of my family let alone strangers, so i always workout at home.

On Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday I work out at the gym and take a water aerobics class. On Thursday, because it's my long day at work, I do some exercises at home. Sunday is my day of rest, so I don't usually exercise that day, though sometimes I might sneak in a few leg lifts and light work with hand weights.
I do both - will go to the gym for strength training and spin / body pump / zumba classes. At home I run, bike, yoga, and pilates. Both can work by themselves or together. If I go to the gym, I will work harder (generally) than at home. The exception is when I'm on my bike or running - then I'm competing against myself and I try to make it a race every day for PR!
I work out at home but at times miss water aerobics and the camaraderie and variety of a gym.
On the whole, however, working out at home allows me to be much more consistent than I would be otherwise.

I go to aquafit at least a couple times a week and I walk the golf course 2 - 3 times/week. I hate exercise classes per se. Too boring! I also go for long walks with my husband. At home I do exercise bike and treadmill once in awhile if I don't feel like going out. I also try to do strength training at home a couple times a week.
My first choice is to be walking/hiking/biking/jogging outside, but I go to the gym for strength, Yoga, Pilates, aerobics classes and to swim. That works well for me.
I am absolutely pathetic at being able to exercise at home. I wish I could since it seems stupid to drive two miles to the gym to one of the above classes. Home is where I work (laundry, cleaning floors, bathrooms, getting meals, cooking and dishes, pay bills, etc.). Thus, I cannot concentrate on anything at home except those and other chores.
I greatly admire anyone who can get exercise at home. I can't manage the "to-do" list and distractions (phone calls, people stopping by, etc.) at home. How do others do it?

I do both. Mostly yoga and Pilates at home, weights and cardio at the gym.
Luckily for me, my gym is at home. I live in an apartment building that has a good-sized gym for its residents, so working out is easy.

-- If I'm home, I have a hard time getting a good ST accomplished. There is a lack of equipment, space, and constant interruptions. -- I prefer cardio outside, but with that said, I'm a "fair weather" exercise person. Our climate includes rainy, dreary weather about 6+ months of the year, so having a gym to go to really helps me to stay on track.
LWADE, could you work out first thing in the morning before your shower, then just get dressed for work from there? Or, could you wait until just before work, then workout and shower and get dressed. Then you wouldn't have to do it twice.
I workout at home as we have a treadmill and several other smaller pieces like weights, resistance bands, and a bunch of videos. My husband & I decided to go with a treadmill versus a gym membership, but I was already working out daily; I don't think the treadmill is a wise investment unless you're already going to the gym on a regular basis.

i have been going to the ymca for ages, but i am thinking of getting my own home weights and a treadmill. i think i would use it more than i do going to the gym i am not sure why, but i just cant get motivated to get to the gym these days.. i work aftternoons and i hate to get showered and dressed and then get sweaty and have to get dressed and shower again for work. if i had weights at home, i cld excercise before i get showered and i would not mind getting all sweaty cause i havent showered yet.
I work out at home. I have taken a few classes at my husband's gym in the past as well as an outside yoga class. I've also gone with him in the mornings when our kids were visiting their grandparents. My husband and I both prefer to workout before work. Since he's been going to the gym at 5 am since before we got together, naturally, that kept up. It's only been in the past year and a half that I've become a regular exerciser. I have DVDs, YouTube on our PS3, and a great weight lifting set-up that we purchased that includes a bar and weights (up to 110), a rack, a bench and some adjustable dumbbells. I also have a treadmill.
