Kris, I love "Fairytale of New York". Nothing more heartbreaking than lives wasted. Simon & Garfunkel's version of "Go Tell it on the Mountain" Stevie Nicks' "Silent Night" TSO "Christmas Canon" Peter, Paul & Mary's "We Wish You a Merry Christmas". They had a way of bringing the most brilliant harmonies to the simplest songs.

I love most of them. The carols you can sing-- "Joy to the World" Hark the Harold Angels Sing", Jingle Bells....I like the Christmas albums by stars-- Jack Johnson, Jackie Evancho, Michael Buble, Chris Isaak, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Big Band Christmas, Julie Andrews from 1967, I have a "Christmas Dinner" and "Christmas Cocktails" CD's which are great for background music, Bette Midler "Cool Yule", My Husband's favorites are "Looking for Christmas" by Clint Black "1995" (excellent CD), and Keny G "the Holiday Album", Jessica Simpson--and there is a duet in there with her ex "baby it's cold outside" which I love.
I try to mix it up so I don't get burned out on the music before Christmas. A fine line between getting "in the mood" and overdoing it.
Today is the day I succeed.

I want a hippopotamus for Christmas, and O Holy Night
I have many favorites for many reasons, but my personal choice the one that gets me all warm and fuzzy is "Merry Christmas Darling" by Karen Carpenter, it reminds me when I couldn't be with my love at Christmas time, but somehow felt connected to him with this song, so this song holds dear to me. I was 20 when this song became so important to me. I am married to this love of mine and this will be our 25th Christmas together :) I equally love other songs, but this one is the one I chose to share with you it's my story, my life. :) Because of this song and all the day dreaming I did in my mind of the perfect Christmas with him I make sure I live those daydreams out and so our Christmas holiday season is always very, very special.
"Little drummer boy", best version to me is by Whitney Houston

'modern' - Elton John's Step Into Christmas
I also love the Grinch song (You're a mean one, Mr. Grich)

there's a relatively new song on youtube... someone sang it at out church's christmas dinner and it made me cry... it's a beautiful song. and super religious songs aren't my forte at all... but this one is good. it's called "Where's the Line to see Jesus?"
