The previous posters have given you some good advice. Your best bet is to talk to your doctor about what exercises are safe and what you should avoid.

Depending on what your back issue is, certain exercises need to be avoided. I strongly recommend talking to your doctor and maybe getting a referral to a physical therapist, if you can make it work with your budget and insurance. I did the same, and I'm lucky to have no limitations, but I do have exercises that I can do to keep me out of pain.
