I had a similar problem when I was running -- I felt like my heart and lungs would give our long before my feet and legs were tired. I'll echo the advice you read here -- SLOW DOWN. Somebody told me to basically run no faster than a fast walk. I have to admit -- it was hard to do. I felt like the ants on the sidewalk were making better time than I was. But it works :) I have been running since June, and I've only just started to increase my speed in 30-second intervals. For some of us, a very conservative approach to training is needed. :)
I agree with the previous poster that you should slow down. If you are out of breath, even if you feel like you're going slow, you're probably still going too fast. The Talk Test can be a good way to gauge the intensity of your workout. You should be able to respond to a question, but not comfortably carry on a conversation while walking.

I have been walking for about 7 weeks. 3-4 times a week. After about 20 minutes I am still out of breath even though I don't walk very fast, and I need a break in between. by the time I get home I feel like I cannot walk any further. I never walk more than 35 minutes each way. I feel just as out of shape as when I started. I don't live on a bus line so if I want to go anywhere this walk is necessary. Before my lifestyle change I rarely went anywhere because I don't drive and I didn't want to do the 'dreaded' walk. I go to my dr. every 3 months because of chronic back pain, and he has done blood tests on me to make sure every thing is ok and it is. I just don't understand why my stamina is not improving.
