Don't worry you will build up your time on the elliptical. I have had to do the opposite and build up my stamina on the treadmill (can't wait for pretty spring days and run/walking outside). As far as the question on purchasing an elliptical: I would NOT recommend getting one from Walmart or stores like that. I purchased one from there and the stride was very short and it was difficult to use. Also the jerky motion on it can cause injuries. Go to a sporting goods store (like Dicks) and test one before you buy it. Make sure the stride feels good and it has the features you want. Many times at this time of year you can get a really good deal on them. I wouldn't put a price point on it but definitely try before you buy.
Okay so how do you calculate how many miles your doing on the elliptical then? Very discouraging for me when im busting my rear on the elliptical and sweating up a storm thinking im doing a set amount of miles when its not translated to real miles. What a bummer!

thanks for the post - my elliptical is collecting dust - seems so daunting to me because i feel like im dying after 5 minutes. i will dust it off this week and try starting out slowly.... i have been doing dvds so feel my cardio has improved.

The 10K track world record for women (which is faster than a road race) is 29:31. So no, elliptical miles definitely do NOT translate to road running miles.
I couldn't stay on the elliptical a long time either my first try. Keep trying and it'll gradually get easier. Your heart and lungs aren't used to that level of a workout, but if you get into a good cardio routine (at least 30 minutes 3 times a week), your stamina will increase.
Remember this post when you reach a weight loss plateau and your frustrated that the scale numbers won't go down. You can also measure your progress in things like endurance and minutes on the elliptical. :-)

My first treadmill session lasted seven minutes. The next one wasn't much better. These days, I literally run for hours for fun :-)
The best advice I got was not being afraid to slow down a bit and step back if I had to. In my case, that meant I had to walk on the treadmill instead of running full out (I started doing a couch to 5k program that began with four minutes of walking and 60 seconds of running). I hated it at first, but once I was at a base level I could handle, I was able to build myself back up properly.
One thing you want to do is look at what's keeping you back. Is it the intensity of the workout? In that case, it might help to slow down a bit or go at a lower resistance (a heart rate monitor could be a good investment for this). If it's pain that's holding you back, you'll definitely want to look into what's causing it before you try to go further. Exercise shouldn't be painful, and pushing through it can lead to injury.
Once you're at a level you can handle, you can start trying to build on that in reasonable chunks. The recommendation is no more than a 10% increase in time or intensity at a time. Keep in mind that it doesn't all have to be one activity: You could start with five minutes on the elliptical, and then do ten minutes of walking on the treadmill or outside, for example (I had the reverse problem when I started - I found the elliptical easy, but the treadmill killed me. I split the two of them up, did what I could handle on the treadmill, and then finished my workout time on the elliptical).

It took me 6 months to work up to 60 minutes...it's not unusual for it to take time.

After reading all your posts about the time on the elliptical, I really feel out of shape. I just got my machine last week and I am only up to 4 minutes....the first day I could only do about 30 seconds. I was wondering did any of you have a hard time in the beginning? I am about 20lbs over weight, but have not really exercised in a long while.
