Lol, I just posted about my own struggles with evening snacking. :) Then I found your thread. I do like your idea about a night check in for those of us who have had a long, tiresome day and need some encouragement when you are at your weakest! Thanks for your post. I don't feel like I'm alone. I am gone from 7:00 am till anywhere from 7:00 - 10:00 at night (or later) due to work, sports, etc. I just want to open the pantry and have some nachos! UGH!

I was going to suggest... perhaps you could also try having some low-fat, low-calorie foods around, so that if you do binge you could, for example, eat a whole tub of fat-free, sugar-free yoghurt and feel full, but not so guilty about it... sorry I know ideally people should never binge, but sometimes it happens, especially if you're tired! I do this sometimes with fat-free popcorn when I feel like eating a whole plate of fries!

Just so yall know, I ate some peanut butter on whole wheat ritz crackers before i left work last night, came home and cleaned and did laundry, and went to bed. Didn't eat!!

Hmm, I see how you can't make your job less stressful! :) I really like your idea to eat before you leave work and just get used to not eating after you get home. Maybe do something else that helps you relax.
Norma- Thats actually a really good idea about the blog.. I never thought of that. And my job.. is stressful lol. Theres not really any way I can make it less stressful. I work in 911 dispatch at the police department. Some nights its crazy, some nights its not... so its not really something I can change. But i see where you're getting at.
Archimedes- I have been using myfitnesspal to track so I am tracking my food, just not on here. And I actually don't track sometimes when I have a splurge which I know is bad.
And I think my brain just thinks I have to eat when I get home.. its not that I dont eat enough throughout the day, because I do. It's just like a mental thing I think. I'm gonna try really hard to just not eat when I get home. Because it seems even when I have some calories left over and I choose a snack that stays in them, its like a domino affect and when I eat something, I wanna eat something else. I know it's mental... I think i might try eating a small snack before I leave work and then not eating when I get home. Ill update yall and let you know how I'm doing!
i agree maybe a small healthy meal when you get home will help you not undo your work

I think in your situation it might be worth adjusting your meals to allow for a small meal when you get home. Know your weakness and figure out a working solution. Not eating isn't working so try to figure out a way to allow yourself to eat something when you get home.

Night eating for me often has to do with getting too hungry and not eating enough during the day. Took me ages to realize it because I had an unrealistic idea about how much to eat. It could also be that you feel you 'deserve' to eat after a long hard day of work. Maybe you can find ways to make work less hard? You can always post this on your blog and ask for help and then check in every midnight on your own blog. Or start a thread on a team that offers room for it, and post there every night how you're doing. Let yourself be supported!

It's true that late night eating can cause a person to pack on the pounds, that doesn't mean that that is the reason that you're not losing.
While a safe weekly weight loss would be 1-2 pounds per week, there will be weeks you don't lose. There will even be weeks you gain ! And that doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong. the weight doesn't magically drop off the minute we decide we need to lose. It really could take 6-8 weeks of healthy eating before a person sees a change in the scale. and that too is normal.
One thing I would ask you is whether or not you are logging all your food choices. I notice that you aren't always logging. Studies have shown that people who log their food on a regular basis, lose more weight than those who don't. I would encourage you to try to log as much of the food you eat to make sure that you aren't eating more than you think.
If you do find yourself snacking at night, it could be a result of not eating enough during the day. Many people in an effort to be "good", will drastically cut their caloric intake in hopes of speeding up their weight loss. This is no good. Eating too little during the day sets a person up for a binge at night. So, if you want to stop snacking at night, try eating a bit more during the day so that you don't feel deprived later.
Also, when is your last meal ? If you ate your dinner at 5-6pm, it's no wonder you may be starving by the time you get home (say 11-midnight). If you want to eat dinner at an earlier hour, that's okay. But, consider having a snack around 9-10pm so that you don't get hungry by the time you get home. Have a couple of pieces of fruit, some nuts, a half a sandwich, etc...
It's just a little something to keep you from being ravenous later.

I would have a pre-planned meal to eat when you get home and then immediately go to bed. If possible, eat it at work just before you leave. It can be dinky, if you aren't hungry - at least then you will know you ate. Maybe a couple crackers and a cheese stick. You have to first break the habit of eating just because you got home and then make it a healthy relationship (in other words, if you are eating out of boredom then either go to bed or find a different outlet.
So my biggest problem right now is eating after i get home from work... i work second shift so i get home around midnight and (after doing great all day), its like a switch flips and I just eat super crappy and undo all my hard work for the day.. and most of the time im not even hungry. This is the reason I'm not losing weight, I know it. Because when I dont do this for several days, the scale will go down. But then I always start doing it again... I wish we had like a group that had mandatory check ins at midnight lol.
