If I eat dinner around 5, I usually have a snack in the evening. If i didn't I would have a harder time sleeping. I just try to stay in my calorie range. Different thing work for different people. I think that the problem with evening snacking would be if you were over your calories for the day already. Or if eating before bed makes it harder for you to sleep.

I eat a snack with my kids at around 5-6 pm. Then I have dinner at 8-9pm.
I guess recent studies have shown people who eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper are more sucessful in weight loss. I don't know how because if I ate a light dinner at 5pm, I'd be hungry again at night and that is always the time where I'm the weakest willed and crave refined carbs and sugars. I find having a satisfying protein/complex carb late dinner keeps me away from late night binges.

It doesn't matter what time of day you eat. What does matter is what you do eat in a 24-hour period. Your body treats whatever you eat, whenever you eat it, in the same way. It never shuts down. Even when you are asleep.
I agree it doesn't matter however you need to learn what works best for your body. Personally I try to eat my big meal at lunch instead of dinner because it helps me ward off afternoon hunger. I stay busy in the evening so hunger isn't much of an issue for me during that time like it is late afternoon.
I know your body processes everything the same no matter what time you eat...But if I eat right before I go to bed, I usually don't sleep well. Sometimes I also wake up starving, which doesn't make much sense to me.

As other posters have stated...it doesn't matter when or at what time you eat. Your body doesn't keep time and doesn't know when it's early or late. All nutrients get processed in the same manner, despite the hour of the day.
if you're not going to bed until 2am it's a very bad idea to stop eating at 6 or 7pm. why you ask? because you're planning on going to bed eight hours after your last meal. if you were going to bed at 10pm and had issues sleeping and digesting at the same time, stopping at 6-7pm wouldn't be a bad plan. but assuming you get at least five hours of sleep that means that breakfast won't be til 7am. which would mean that, despite being awake for 19 hours a day you're not eating for 12-13 hours of the day. and if you sleep later, then that number goes higher. so if you are sleeping in until 10 am, you're trying to cram a whole day's worth of eating into 8 hours. if we were talking about the standard normal schedule person hours that would be the equivalent of someone who gets up at 6am and goes to bed at 10pm not eating after 2pm. if you are one of the people who has issues sleeping and digesting, not eating for somewhere around 2-4 hours before bed is fine. but if you aren't going to bed until 2am, that cutoff time will be somewhere between 10pm and midnight. yes, some people do have success curbing mindless munching by instating a "no food after x pm" rule. but again, 6pm to 2am is eight hours, or nearly a full workday. if you aren't spacing a meal in that timeframe somewhere, you should be having a substantial snack or two.
then you have to look at what you are eating. do your snacks have protein, fiber, carbs and fat? if they don't then you should start tweaking them so that they do. snacks should be like mini meals that contribute something to your diet, not twinkies. apples and nut butter, hummus and veggies, celery and cheese, fruit and cheese, a small [1/2 or 1/3 or 1/4] portion of what you would eat for a meal [like a bean based chili, vegetable soup, etc] are the things you want to be snacking on.
Your digestive system has no idea what time it is-- all the food gets processed the same way no matter what time it is. Many people who work nights or later shifts, just change their meal times to accomodate their schedules. Just because it says "breakfast" doesn't mean you have to eat it at, say, 6 or 7 am.
The only thing about eating right before (or close to bedtime) is that some people have problems with acid reflux or whatever, where eating too close to bedtime could cause problems. And some people who have a snack in the evening, find that it triggers overeating while watching tv, so they'll make it a rule to not eat after, say, 7 pm.
I find that I sleep better if I eat something an hour or two before I go to bed. I include carbs, fat, and protein-- peanut butter on crackers or a serving of trail mix. It's included in my meal plan for the day so I stay within my calorie range.
It really doesn't matter what time you eat if you are staying within your calorie count for the day. Some people say you should stop eating 3-4 hours before bedtime, so if you were following that you could still eat up to 10 or 11. But I think the experts on here will tell you it doesn't matter. If it was me I would eat supper at a normal time and have a healthy snack around 9 or 10 to hold me over.
I have always heard that one shouldnt eat really late in the day. I guess this doesnt work with those who have varying shifts of work. I have been trying to eat no later than 6pm...but, I find myself going for snacks more often around 9pm. So, today I am going to try to push my evening meal back to around 7 or 8pm...I know I wont be going to bed before 2am, so...that leaves me room for one later snack...But is this a good or bad idea??? I just dont want to be snacking several times. I feel if I eat a little later, maybe I will not be craving snacks and wondering why I am not satisfied, I know I should go to bed a little earlier, but this week that is out of the question.
