Occasionally... It is best for me not to use it every night. My insomnia usually ramps up for the week before my cycle: night sweats, wide awake in early AM, feel run over. Melatonin helps me fall back to sleep quicker, but there is the possibility of "weird" dreams.
I take 5 milligram dosage. It helps me go to sleep and stay asleep. I was told by my dr that it works better than a prescription drug. I have taken it for years and have had no problems. I sleep so much better because I do take it. I would not go back to not taking it and fighting for a good night sleep. It gives me the rest I need. I wake up and usually feel well rested. I use to wake up so tired from trying to get rest but not any more. I would so recommend it.

On occasion and yes, I would have vivid dreams.However, if you are on other meds ask your physician before taking. It cn re-act with other meds. Vlarian I was told by my dr. can cause liver damage over prolonged use.

Some people who take it regularly report having extremely vivid dreams, but in an enjoyable way (not nightmares). I always have vivid dreams so I never noticed, but I'd be interested to know if you do experience this :)
i started using it when my neurologist said the ambien wasn't doing enough to help me sleep. i have fibro and migraines and good sleep is important. i was worried about taking both but it works and i feel better.

My sister has fibro, she uses melatonin as well. Her fibro is pretty extreme, so it helps her doze off when she can't stop focusing on the pain. I've used it for insomnia before. Like others have said, it helps you fall asleep but it doesn't help you stay asleep.

I can't use any kind of sleep aid - even something as 'natural' as melatonin - because I wake up the next morning feeling like my head is cemented to my pillow and then I walk around like a zombie all day long.
But I did have trouble sleeping and I also suffer from anxiety. But I did some searching around, looking for something that could possibly help me, and ran across a product called Natural Calm. It's a powdered magnesium supplement that you mix into any drink (I bought the orange flavor and mix mine into OJ). And ever since taking that stuff on a daily basis, I'm less anxious, I don't walk around day after day with irrational worries and I'm sleeping so much better at night. Plus I wake up feeling refreshed, not drugged.
Just something you might want to look into. Don't take my word for it, search for the stuff on Amazon and/or Drugstore.com and read the reviews. The testimonials alone, from the people who have tried it, is what sold me on it. And it works. Except I wait until nighttime, maybe 30-45 minutes before I go to bed, to take it. Yesterday I made the mistake of taking it around lunchtime and by 2:00 I was nearly face down on my keyboard.

I use Alteril (over the counter) on occasion which has melatonin, L-Tryptophan and Valerian. I find it very helpful for restful sleep and improved mood. I try not to take it regularly so that I don't become dependent physically or emotionally, but it makes a noticeable difference.

Look up the side affects online, and not from a web site that sells the product, for Pete's sakes! Certain medications can be nullified when taken with Melatonin, and it interacts badly with diabetic meds, for one. My dh is on anti rejection meds and diabetic meds, bp meds, etc. and he can never take melatonin nor so called herbal stuff, just because something is "natural" and "Herbal" does not mean it's safe for everyone at all. Read up on it, and then ask your doctor before delving into that stuff.
We use a very low dose melatonin... it gave me freaky dreams at first, though, so I switched to a melatonin cream. That works okay for me. I've become accustomed, through periodic use, to the tablets, which my husband still uses. If you want to try it, you might try the cream alternating with the tabs if it gives you any trouble.

Yes, I take it, along with other things, on the suggestion of my sleep specialist. I have found that if I take a 5mg dose, it does help me get to sleep, but I am groggy the next day--not fun. Now I use 500 mcg chewable tablets and those seem fine for me.
My understanding is that melatonin won't really help you stay asleep, but it can help you get to sleep and can regulate sleep patterns. My sleep doctor says that it works best if you get up and take a 20-minute walk in natural light early in the morning.
I use melatonin sometimes. My doctor told me that melatonin is produced by the pineal gland in the brain, and that if you take supplements you'll stop producing natural melatonin. But I take trazodone and mirtazapine for sleep and sometimes they are not enough. Herbs also help me, like chamomile, valerian and passion flower.

@Fenway - I have the same type of insomnia: I can usually go to sleep, but I don't stay asleep. melatonin didn't do anything for me. Now when I wake up I'll drink some chamomile tea. That usually gets me drowsy again.
even though both are 'natural' you should still check with your dr & pharmacist to make sure there are no interactions with your meds happy
I have used melatonin but it didn't help me at all.

I use melatonin - I finally found it after years of chronic insomnia. What a relief!!
For me it works great. I like it also because it comes in different strengths 3mg, 5mg, and 10mg. I started on 3, and I was on them for a while, then I was taking 2 (6mg). I just bought 5 mg, and those are working great. If you try them, start at 3mg.
It's all natural, but check with your doctor or pharmacist first to be sure it's ok for you.

I'm having trouble sleeping big time I'll fall after awhile and then only sleep a few hours I do deal with a lot of pain from the fibro and someone that has fibro suggested it and I called my pharmacist to find out if it would interfere with any of my meds... Anyone use this and if so have you had good results?
