Yes -- I have been buying collectible Hallmark ornaments for both of my kids (son and daughter) over the years and they are turning 24 and 22 shortly! I love reminiscing about when they were young and we would always put the two new ornaments I had purchased for them on the tree first each year. I have ornaments from my mother and ex-mother in law. I have hand made ornaments from my kids and nieces. I have ornaments my kids purchased for me when in grade school that I cherish and hang with the rest! I have glass ornaments that I bought for my first Christmas Tree when I got on my own when I was 19 and still have the original boxes! I have an ornament my ex and I bought thinking my daughter would be born before Christmas (a little Christmas stocking) but she wasn't born until December 30th! We also have ornaments of some of the special pets we have had over the years which also bring back fond memories. Every year when decorating, I talk about the different stories of each ornament with my kids so they will appreciate their significance. Christmas is my favorite holiday.

I also have some handmade ornaments from when my son was little those are just priceless! I love the idea that one of you said about the silk flowers from your wedding bouquet, I've still got mine and I think I'll snip off a few and make an ornament as that was one of the best days of my life and it belongs to be seen at Christmas.

Yes my angel is 30 years old it was the first angel my husband and I bought for the tree. Most of my ornaments have a special meaning behind them.

yes, special ornaments from years back, made and bought.
Yes. Our ornaments have stories behind them. We don't generally go out and buy a new one each year though. I have a few ornaments that I had before I married. Dh and I married in December and some silk flowers from our wedding are on our tree every year. My mom gave all of her grandchildren a new ornament every year. I also have several ornaments that she made. She died a few years ago so I think of her when I see them. We have some handmade ornaments that were gifts from friends. We made an ornament the year we bought our house and when we adopted our dog. Dd has made ornaments as projects over the years so it is fun to see things she made in the past.

when I did put up a tree, that was my favorite thing about it - all the memories from the various ornaments over the years.
I've either given my ornaments away or added them to the collection for our office tree. The ones that sis & I made over the years went to her; the others went to friends I knew would appreciate them (mostly folks newly married or newly living away from their parents who wanted some 'history' for their tree).
EOWYN - if they have big after Christmas sales in Malaysia, that's when you need to look for your tree. I bought a very nice table top tree & miniature ornaments for my mom at an after Christmas sale many years ago. Over the years, I've added a few ornaments to her collection. Now when she decorates for the holidays, all she has to do is take the bag down from the closet, pull the decorated tree out and sit it on the table. Voilà - all done!

When I got married 27 yrs ago we got an Akita (dog) and she was our baby. My mother bought her a tree ornament every year - a squirrel because she loved to chase them, a hallmark one that was called reign-doggy (a dog with antlers on its head) and other types of things that the dog liked. We then continued this tradition with the other dogs we have had since then and every year each of these ornaments bring back great memories. Our dtr now has 2 cats and we buy her 2 Hallmark ornaments every year that is cat related and you insert the cat's picture. This year she went & bought them herself so she could have them on the tree now instead of waiting for Christmas. Two of her friends have also started this tradition after seeing her tree. What can I say, we love our pets.

My mom started that same tradition, and by the time my sister and I moved out of the house, we had our own hearty ornament collections to take to our own homes.
I absolutely love it. My mom still puts up ornaments that we made together, or that my sister and I made in school. There are also ornaments that my parents made when they were children (they're pretty fragile now), and those are always neat to see and talk about with my niece.
I am pregnant with my first child, and plan on doing the same thing for him or her. It's a really great tradition to have.

I haven't put up a Christmas tree in years. That is one of the commercializations of the Holiday I don't like. When the kid was little I bought into it but not anymore.
Yes, always put one on with the year displayed. Have gotten the hallmark ones for the past 26 years.

I'm glad you have at least a small tree to put you in the holiday spirit, not sure if where you are they have dollar stores but in the states we do and they usually have the small ornaments for a dollar. Your right ornaments are getting very expensive, but I try to go to places where they aren't as shocking with the sticker price. I hope you have a Wonderful Holiday Season! Even with the tree having just a bit of snow I'm sure it's beautiful! It's really what is in your heart and how we look at things that matter and if it makes you happy then it has served it's purpose....
I have yet to get a Christmas tree big enough that I can decorate it! This is because I'm a lone Christian in a Buddhist family.
I finally got a small tree to put on my writing table. It's so small that I can't hang anything on it! But the fake snow on it gives my room a festive air!
I can't afford to get a big tree, even if it's a fake one, let alone the ornaments. They get more expensive every year! Maybe one day, but not now.
Atm, I have other commitments!

I started giving my then bf (now hubby) an ornament for our first Christmas together (I knew he was the one). Since then we've given one to one another and buy a family one every year and when our son was born we bought him one for every year. Our tree is full of our family history and I love it , my husband said he's so glad I started that tradition and my son gets a kick out of seeing all the ornaments with the different years. I feel like our tree is filled with love and my hubby says the best part of putting up the tree is watching my son and I put the ornaments on as he hands them to us. Some of the very first ornaments go in the front and everyone that see's our tree also loves the ornaments. I was just wondering if anyone else does this with their family?
