All the advice you have been given is great and you need to try different things to see what works for you.
But, here is another option. I am something of a nightowl and while it is really easy for me to watch what I eat during the day, I just don't enjoy life if I can't have an evening snack. So, I work this into my calories for the day, usually leaving at least 200, sometimes more, for a snack before bed.
Some of this is healthy--air popcorn, apple microwaved with a little br. sugar and walnuts, etc. But, I always leave open the possibility of a not-so healthy snack too, as it can be the only thing that really satisfies me.
Often I have 1 oz. (yes, I weigh them) of Sunchips and a Ghiredelli raspberry chocolate square. This is very satisfying to me and I look forward to it. Hershey kisses (eat just one)_ are a great choc. fix too, and only about 25 calories. Eat it sloooowly.
Would I be better off eating celery or carrots or nothing? Probably. But, I will not feel fulfilled and most likely will binge. Choose a couple of healthy or less healthy things that you really, really like and plan them into your calories for the day. It's ok to treat yourself a little!

While all the ideas posted are great, my first question s WHY? Are you eating enough during the day? What's going on in your headspace? I ad a client that was awesome to perfection and same as you, she binged at night! Healthy food...but still! It had to do with anxiety, guilt...she went to her faucet and her hubby went to bed...she had n unhappy marriage, she has 4 kids and a successful business and NEVER took time for herself...so...somehow that sent her to the fridge.
This sounds like a head issue or a heart issue...I say that with love...food problems are never about food as you know.
When I finish dinner, I have a cup of herbal tea and that's my closure o the day...no more food. Maybe a ritual that feeds your soul and mind at this time daily would help you snap out of it. Even journaling or something.

I'm going to give you a piece of advice I give to all new members and it's this,"Don't look at good health or weight loss with an all or nothing mentality". If the only healthy thing you did for yourself today was to drink 8 glasses of water, that's still a step in the right direction.
Remember, you're trying to change habits learned over a life time. That's not going to happen overnight, a week, a month or even a year. Change takes time. thus the need to be patient with yourself and your body.
NO ONE ever became a healthy eater overnight. it's impossible. Start with some simple changes first. As the old song goes,"accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative". Give yourself credit for the POSITIVE things you do for yourself and don't beat yourself up because you're not perfect. You don't have to be perfect to be healthy.
BUT, you do have to be patient with yourself and your body. You didn't gain the weight overnight, it's not coming off overnight.
Take baby steps literally and figuratively. make those small changes and before you know it, you will be engaging in a healthier lifestyle. like I said, change takes time. so, if you're eating healthfully in the morning, that's a good start.
Patience, it's a virtue.

That certainly sounds like something that works for you. I like to play Solitaire on my tablet but if you don't have one you can always use a deck of playing cards. When I am trying to wind down I'll play very slow and think about each move. I think like many other people I do well with occupying my hands. I really like the idea of the kitchen being closed. I also find going to bed with a good book makes it harder to get up and do something you know you shouldn't. SparkGuy says if you mess up, don't keep adding to it by continuing to eat more and more. Forgive yourself (we're only human) and get back on track. Hope you find something that works well for you. Let us know.

Im sitting here, and love the support we can find here! I am snacking, but its cucumber slices with a little salt and pepper :) and then im going to start on a photoshop project. it worked great last night, started work on a photo at 11 pm and worked for 3 hours straight.... didnt even realize it, and never ate a thing :)
Though I don't have children I find myself doing the same thing at night. I loved the suggestion about telling oneself the kitchen is closed. Mine seems to be a 24 hour quick stop. The other suggestions were great too. Thank you for the post and thanks to the others for their responses.
I have struggled this Christmas and need to read all the wise words I can tonight.

ARHODEN6 - I have been there SO many times, too!!!!!! You are definitely not alone. Recognizing this, wanting to do something about it & reaching out for suggestions shows a lot of positive power right there! I agree with some of the other people about finding something else to do to distract you. I like to quilt & find that if I spend a few minutes working on a project or even just going into my sewing room & organizing a bit helps me out. My best suggestion is just to find 1 or 2 ways to change up your nightly routine (I know you are tired after a full day!) - Words with Friends?, reading?, a craft or other hobby like scrapbooking?, maybe 5-10 min of yoga? - just going into a different room than you usually do. Keep sparking - there are a lot of people rooting for you!!!!!! Happy New Year, too! :D

I just can't have anything sugar related or any type of junk food available or I will eat it. I try very hard to only have things like low fat yogourt, fruits, veggies, and perhaps some natural almonds available for snacks. For me, the rule is if I buy it, I eat it so the answer is I don't buy it! However, Christmas time upset all that as I wanted to do some baking (which I pigged out on) and have some things around for company, but of course, I ate everything before any guests ever arrived so really I should just stick to buying nothing sweet EVER!

when i feel like that i chug 16 oz of water wait 15 minutes and then see if im still wanting a snack OR since it's night time and i dont' want to eat anymore I'll brush my teeth..The clean and mouth wash feeling instantly makes me not want to eat anythin!

While i was reading your post, i felt like i could have been the one writing it. I feel the exact same way you do. I have 2 school age girls and my baby is now 1. When they are down at night i just want to reward myself with anything i want. I justify my snacking by saying " i deserve this or that". What i have been trying in the past few weeks is taking a really loooooong shower once i put them down. Then i curl up in bed and watch " The Big bang Theory " till i fall asleep. LOL! I can't snack in my bed so that helps me. Avoid going to the kitchen or lving room after the shower. Just turn the lights off and shut the kitchen Down when you are ready to put the kids to bed.

Ive tried, doing stuff like that before, not as a way to stay busy but just for fun, but I have 2 school age girls who spill stuff, and twin 2 year old boys... they get into anything and everything and theres really not any place for a puzzle or something, and puzzle books just drive me nuts, and make me snack more lol. I cant get the hang of knitting, and just cant come up with more ideas... :(

Can you find something else to do with your hands when you are sitting and relaxing? Flip through a magazine, knit, do a wordseach/crossword puzzle, or a jigsaw puzzle on a card table? Keeping my hands busy, keeps them from putting unwanted food in my mouth!

Ok so ive only been doing this for a few days, and I have done great with following my meal plans, and watching portion sizes, even stayed on track with water intake, but after i put my twins to bed (about 8 pm) I clean up then have an hour to relax before my daughters bed time.... the problem is that each time i sit down to relax, or just watch a show, or even try to keep busy, I wind up snacking... I cant help it.... :( tonight alone I have added another slice of pizza, plus a handful of white chocolate chips.... and 2 cookies...... thats alot.... I have health snacks.... but dont want them.... what can i do to help with the relaxing time snacking?
