My birthday went well. I went to the zoo with my husband and son and just relaxed. I think I was getting anxious because all I could see was past birthdays of my husband picking fights with me (which he did on Friday). Or I could see the day going something like this: My son (12) gets bored and start complaining, I get frustrated, husband gets mad, husband yells at son, and then husband complains about son for the next 3 hours. Miserable time had by all.
They relaxed and had fun which helped with my anxiety and only problem I had was waiting to get seated at restaurant in downtown Columbus. My son wanted to go walking around but by himself and complained he when he was told no cause he's still too young with several bars nearby.
Depression has a lot to do with focusing on ourselves, perhaps celebrating your birthday, not for you but for your husband, who wants to do something nice with you would help you focus out. Be grateful for the day and for those who want to celebrate with you, and enjoy the day...Happy Birthday!
KMFITZ721 Having unreal expectations sets me up for depression every time. The other extreme is to have no expectations a all, which is also depressing, Read articles, but honestly, if depression isn't a norm for you, it could just be one of those female-ish days!
I guess it would depend on the reason for being depressed on your birthday. I was this year, but it was my first birthday since my husband's death, so it was understandable.
Some people get a bit depressed on their birthday when they hit the '39 and 40, 49 and 50's etc. because it 'signals' they are getting older.
IF, however, you have been a bit down lately, maybe not sleeping very well, got a lot on your mind, etc. etc., then I would be inclined to make an appointment and talk about it with your Dr. There could be something medical going on, but you could be suffering from a low-grade form of depression, etc. and for those there are many options available for treatment.
My birthday was on Tuesday. I was feeling down in the dumps (randomly) on that day. It's perfectly normal to have good days and bad days. It just so happens that your birthday was an off-day.
I know my 'birthday depression' was linked to feeling like I hadn't done enough in life up until this point. I felt like I hadn't accomplished anything. Someone gave me a good suggestion (on here) to make a list of all the accomplishments big & small I've made so far in life. It helped me see the overlooked items that I haven't celebrated myself for...
Keep your head up. Tomorrow is another day. Today may be your "birth day", but you can celebrate this Entire Year of being whatever age it is!

Happy Birthday !
Is it normal to be a little blue on your birthday ? Sure. It happens. We all hope that our birthdays should be days we celebrate, but some times they can be depressing too. Why ? We may get a little introspective about our lives. We may find a wrinkle or line on our face where we didn't have one before. We may see grey hairs. We may even wonder why we haven't accomplished more in our lives.
It doesn't have to be like that. Birthdays should be fun !! It sounds like you need a little pampering. So, why not go out with the hubby ? Go to a movie and dinner. If you don't want to do that, how about getting a manicure and pedicure ? How about going to the hairdresser and getting a new hair cut. How about a massage ??? Wouldn't that be wonderful ?
If you've been under a lot of stress recently, your birthday is a good opportunity to treat yourself and unwind. It's okay to be a little selfish on your birthday. Have some fun !! Moping around the house isn't going to help.
Look at all the good things that happened in your life this year and think of how many wonderful things will happen in the next. Like a fine wine, we get better with age.
Absolutely... it's a new mile stone and you don't know what's in store. But you can make it exciting. Try thinking of things to do differently this next year. Something new you want to learn or play or cook or exercise. You make the decision every morning to be happy or not. If you choose happiness, you will find happiness. Sometimes you have to fake it to make it. Live for today, you've gotten another chance for living. What's your favorite healthy food? What's your favorite movement? Tell your husband these things. Get up and get going. Smile.

Is it normal to be depressed on your birthday? I haven't felt like doing anything but sit on the couch. My husband keeps asking me what I want to do tomorrow since that's when we're planning on celebrating it and I don't really want to do anything.
