I love coconut oil...Not tried butter as we don't really eat any butter-like spreads but only bake with them. There was a very good article recently on how the new healthy eating focus in the north has not only impacted on animals but on people - how quinoa now it is a trend is too expensive for the people in Peru etc whereas it was their staple food.
I just read the spark article about the trends in coconut oil use, andi want to point out one very important thing that the artcle completely missed. Many vegans are turning to coconut butter (and oils) as a replacement for butter, because margarine (all brands) and EARTH BALANCE (which has always been the vegan alternative to butter) use palm oil. Palm oil is destroying the habitats of orangutans and vegans are eschewing products with palm oil. In the hunt for a spreadable or other alternative to buter and margarine - coconut butter has slipped into first place. It has nothing to do with calorie counting or fat percentages - it has everything to do with trying to make choices that respect animals and their environment.
