I quit soda when I was in my 20's. I worked in the mall at that time, and all of my coworkers had a tradition of buying a large soda from Mickey D's in the food court and then running there for free refils during their breaks. One day I filled mine up with ice water, and never looked back. I don't remember the pain and suffering I must have went through, but I'm in my 30s now and still don't drink soda. On very rare occasions I am forced to have some, it tastes like dirty socks to me. The moral of the story is... the pain and suffering will be forgotten, but the health benefits last forever. Since I think the original poster knew that she didn't want to drink soda any more, the question is how to give it up, not why it's bad. Here's what I did to give it up completely...
I started drinking Kool-Aid - I know, "Oh No! All that SUGAR!!" So what? soda has a ton of sugar too. The difference is, *I* control the sugar in Kool-Aid. I got the packets, whatever flavor I wanted, and I made it the way I liked it (usually about 1 and a quarter cups of sugar). Then, after a while, it seemed too sweet, so I dropped it down to a cup of sugar, then 3/4 cup, then about a half cup. By this point, my kids wouldn't even drink the stuff because it was so watered down, but I didn't mind it. The whole process took months, by the way, not days or even weeks.
After that, I moved on to LifeWater. Just enough flavor to taste decent (after I weaned myself off the really sweet stuff), but not nearly as much sugar as soda or Kool-Aid.
After a while, I just decided that the LifeWater wasn't worth the extra calories, so I went to straight water. I don't even consider soda as an option anymore - since I gave up the carbonated stuff, the carbonation makes me super-sick if I drink even 8 ounces of the stuff.
You see that there's no diet soda involved here. That's because I'm allergic to the Aspartame - that sucks, let me tell you. They put that stuff in everything these days, from chewing gum to bread.
Personally, weaning myself slowly off soda was the way to go, my husband is a cold-turkey kinda guy. Everyone is different, let us know when you find your way because it will probably be completely different still :)
I gave up caffeine in January so I do not drink soda or coffee or tea; even the decaf stuff. I feel so much better. The only think I drink now is water and I love it!

I can't believe people still buy this stuff; not only is it poison in many ways, even the diet pop reeks havoc on your teeth structure. The fact that you're 'craving' it means that there's an addictive component to it and likely that's not an accident. The corporations that make this stuff have all sorts of ways of making you crave their products.
100s of dollars a year to the equivalent of a drug seller that doesn't care if they're poisoning you? I don't think so... not to mention the pollution all those plastic bottles are causing, even if some are recycled.
There's nothing wrong with water provided it's filtered; look into reverse osmosis or other forms of water purification to get rid of residual fluoride, birth control hormones and pharmaceuticals as well as pesticide runoffs that are in all our water supplies now; if you drink a half gallon of ice water a day, you burn a few calories bringing that up to body temperature before you pee it out too...
if you want flavor, get some fresh or frozen berries of whatever kind you like, put them through a sieve, use the juice at about half and half with water and sweeten with stevia which is now available everywhere and extremely inexpensive given how little you need. DO NOT BUY COCA-COLA COMPANY'S STEVIA BRAND! Don't encourage them, they're evil. Stevia powder is now available in the bulk section of my local small town grocer so chances are it's available where you are or buy it on line. They vary in strength/sweetness, try different brands.
Lastly, if you must have caffeine, buy it in pill form at your local drugstore. Typically it's sold where aspirin is, in the same aisle. It's only a few pennies for a 200 mg tablet, far less than you would pay for an equivalent amount of coffee/caffeine. And look into ginseng which gives you an energy boost and has many other benefits.

Is based on individuals calling in to report that aspartame made them sick, with no evidence that the cause of the sickness was the aspartame. I.e. I could pick up a box of cereal, then call the FDA and say that the blueberries in the cereal made me have a seizure, when in fact the cause of my seizure may have been a pre-existing condition and it was just a coincidence that I had just eaten the cereal.
Even though there is no evidence that the reported ingredient caused the illness, ALL of the reports are still recorded by the FDA and are release to the government for inspection and analysis i.e. statistics, trends
Therefore these reports should not be used to back up a claim that aspartame is bad, because they are not evidenced-based scientific findings.
In fact, currently there are absolutely no evidence-based scientific findings today that have successfully linked aspartame to any illness. Yes there are evidence-based scientific studies that have been conducted and will draw conclusions, but if you look at the study in full detail, you will see that a direct link of aspartame to adverse affects in humans has not been found.
That is not to say that aspartame is not bad for you. It very well may be. We just haven't proved it as a fact yet.
If anything makes you feel bad when you consume it, don't consume it. If you consume anything in excess quantities, it will make you sick, even healthy food i.e. iron is a essential nutrient for us, but if we eat too much of it, it can cause kidney damage and other problems.
So all that being said, weight the pros and cons and make a decision for yourself on what you feel is best for yourself. Be very careful with what you read, even in published books, especially about scientific claims. Make sure to read the studies carefully before passing on false information to others. False information can possibly do more harm than good.

Oh wow can I relate! The first time I tried to give up soda (I was drinking over 2 liters of Coke daily) I had given it up for Lent but only made it a day and a half. The second time I made it through Lent but had a 2 liter bottle waiting for me when Lent was over. Eventually I decided I just had to do it cold turkey. I drank things like sugar free iced tea, fresh squeezed lemonade (with sugar but still better than soda) and a drink I would make with seltzer, a little artifical sweetener, a little maraschino cherry juice, a twist of lemon and a maraschino cherry, which felt like a treat. It's incredibly hard and I hope you can do it. I still drink soda a few times a week in the evening but I only drink sugar free (I love the orange soda) and I call it my "dessert" Good luck, I know how hard it is.

For me, Diet Soda was my issue. I rarely drank regular soda, but I drank diet soda all the time. Earlier this week I read an article about a study showing Diet Soda doing the same damage to your teeth as crack and meth. I don't remember the details, so I can't determine the veracity of the statement, but sometimes the shock factor is the best motivation to quit cold turkey. My parents both have poor dental health, and it's in my family history to have terrible teeth (my aunt had to have all of her teeth replaced before she was 40) so this was incentive enough for me.
For the caffeine, I switched to teas. There's a tonne of variety, and I find a lot of them are sweeter than pop to me, especially as I get more fruits and vegetables into my diet. I find myself drinking at least one cup of green tea a day though, strictly for the caffeine. Black teas are also very high in caffeine, if you find that green tea isn't enough to stave off the withdrawal.
The thing that helps me most is just deciding I don't really want it. My body may crave it for a while, but *I* as a person do not want that. Every time I find myself reaching for pop whether it's in the fridge or at the store I stop myself and go "Do I want THIS or do I want something sweet? There are much better choices if you want something sweet, Liz"

I just posted my lime slushie recipe for folks to consider for another drink option.
It is difficult, but well worth the effort. I try to drink mostly teas, green and black, iced and hot. Water, water and water--sometimes with flavor. On the rare occasion that I have a diet coke, it really makes me feel bloated and gives me heartburn.
1-32 oz. jar of "Just Cranberries", no sugar added..very tart! I put 4 oz in another 32 oz jar, and fill with water. Sweeten with Stevia (a healthy plant sweetener).
I fill a 2 cup glass 1/2 with ice, fill 1/2 full of the cran water, and top off with Sparkling water. It is fizzy and sweet and healthy and VERY low in calories and natural sugar.
I used to drink diet Coke all the time. Then I learned about the Aspartame it is sweetened with...Google it and see what a poison it is!! Now, on the rare occasion I have one, it tastes AWFUL!!! MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!! :)

I still struggle.. probably withdrawal symptoms. But I find that being sluggish may just have to be a way of life. I use zevia which gives the caffeine but is sweetened with stevia. A bit more costly, but if I limit to one a day, the cost goes way down.
I stopped drinking soda a bit ago and haven't looked back. I read about how bad it is besides just the sugar and/or artificial sugar they put in it which I knew was bad, but the actual ingredients that make soda carbonated are really bad for your body...that and it doesn't actually keep you hydrated that well, water is all you need. Why get your calories from drinks when you could be getting them from eating food? I'd rather eat more food then drink caloric drinks.

If you think it's too expensive, don't drink the soda and every time you go to have your "one" soda, put $1 in a jar instead. You'll be surprised at how quickly you raise the money, and you might even kick the habit in the meantime. (Maybe purchase a rewarding pedicure in the mean time?)

My issue wasn't the sugar in pop, since I drank diet, it was the caffeine making me really dehydrated. My mother's side of the family seems to have a sensitivity to caffeine.
Since I cut out so much of my favourite foods from my life, I still wanted something zero calories but with flavour.
I couldn't have cut out pop without herbal tea. There are SO many varieties nowadays, it's insane. I have an entire shelf in on of my kitchen cubpoards just full of different herbal teas. At work, I keep a variety pack, because depending on my mood, I might want something different. It's easy to get sick of the same flavour all the time.
The smell is so therapeutic and so is the steam. Before I drink the tea, while it's cooling, I'll just hold my nose over the cup and inhale the steam deeply. It's quite relaxing.
At first, I drank lots and lots of herbal tea, because the pop craving was constant. I was putting sugar in my tea for sweetness, so I was feeling the negative effects of that. But the goal was to get over the pop problem first, then deal with lessening the sugar in my tea or just having fewer cups of tea.
The cravings for pop finally left after two months, with one really bad week-long craving toward the end.
The third month, I started putting less sugar in my tea, and now I have only 0-2 teas a day. I could probably have more, but I feel happy just having this amount.

I don't think advising anyone to drink diet soda is a good suggestion. Diet soda just brings more problems esp with the aspartame most contain. And diet soda can lead to craving even more soda. Best just to go cold turkey.

I quit soda two weeks ago. I lost 55 pounds without giving it up. But I'm of the mindset that you can't go from 0 to 60 mph in a split second. Making healthy decisions is the same way. So I quit soda when I was ready to do so, for the health benefits.
I chose to quit soda because I was giving up artificial sweeteners. I don't have any intentions on giving up caffeine. So I have no problem drinking tea.
I am having the same problem...I use to drink 8-10 20 oz soda's a day and have cut it back till about 2-3...I feel so much better when I dont drink many, but am looking for a way to kick this habit. I get caffeine withdrawal headaches if I dont drink them.

Google why soda is bad for the human body. I stopped drinking soda for over a year then for some reason I started up again. You can tell a difference when you stop drinking it. I reminded myself of the dangers and I've been soda free for almost a month now. :-)
If you are drinking regular soda the first step is to make yourself drink diet. You will likely say that you don't like the taste --- that is the point. If you are a Coke drinker for example and you make yourself drink a diet Coke instead, you are less likely to drink the entire can/bottle because it doesn't taste as good as the regular option. You are also less likely to pick it again as soon. This gives you the chance to include more water, low fat/fat free milk or 4 oz of 100% juice in its place.
