Yes and I do it everyday. I make an informed decision to exercise too many hours but it gives me so much satisfaction that I am unwilling to give it up soooooo. The symptoms are fatigue, sleeping too much, achy joints, stomach upset, headache and many others. I have had the same habit for so long it's hard to break but some day when my body says no more I will change it.

I was actually wondering about this too. I'm a recent addition and have started walking a mile a day. (Five days so far) We are planning on walking that distance for a week and adding half a mile a week or so. Since this is really my only exercise, I was wondering if it would hurt to add another walk in the evening. Also a couple of sets of one of the work outs on the generator. How often should I do those?

Doing too much can actually set up internal issues with inflammation and cortisol that is released when the the body is stressed--whether physical, mental, or whatever. Without a balance (especially as we get older), I believe you can cause problems instead of helping.

SparkPeople flagged me recently when I entered 70 minutes in my strength training tracker. They recommend no more than 60 minutes for each strength training session.

Thank you! I have to remember I am not the person I was 15 years ago and things might go slower this time around due to RA and other factors!

There are many tell tell signs when you over do it, pain, feeling exhauted, sleepy, hard time getting up in the morning. RA is an autoimmune disorder so that when you over do it you are asking for serious problems. There is scarring and deformity that is irreversable. BE VERY CAUTIOUS!

Yes, you can exercise too much. It's called overtraining, and what constitutes overtraining depends on the person.

Generally speaking, you should always have at LEAST one rest day, sometimes two. How much rest you need depends on you; and rest doesn't necessarily have to mean sitting on your butt, either.

Honestly, it sounds to me like you may be overtraining; that's a LOT of exercise; if you're working out more than an hour every day, that is likely too much. It's hard to say what you're doing, since you don't really clearly explain what you're doing when.

With too much exercise, you begin to break your body down instead of build it up.

Anywhere up to an hour a day is normal and healthy.

There isn't such a thing as "too much exercise" so much as there is "imbalance between exercise, rest, and proper fuelling". You might be surprised what levels of daily exercise pro athlete bodies are used to! The human body can do a lot! With appropriate training, building up, and nutrition. ;)

For average healthy adults, especially if trying to lose weight, half to a full hour a day is fine. Anything more is probably overkill.

I have auto immune arthritis and have been working out, watching my food for about 5 months and lost 45 pounds. My son went back to school this week and I added in an extra 35 minutes of cardio which I want to increase to two extra days of cardio not just the one. The day I did the cardio I did 15min strength training and 40 minutes power yoga as well. I did not take a rest day all
week. I just wonder how much exercise one needs? Right now ( through the summer) I did one 45 min and one 35 min cardio ( elliptical), 2 15 min strength training, and four power yoga session ( intermediate level) 55 minutes etch. Now I am adding a 35 minute high intensity stationary bike to that. The elliptical workouts are at the high level as well. I am tired from the arthritis flare ups so it is hard to tell if I am over working. I feel like I gained this week but the scale stayed the same.
