That's a relief that the water weight will eventually go away, I do notice, though, that if I've worked extra hard one day,, I am a pound or so heavier for a day or so. Thanks for replying to my message.

@JMCROF: The reason no one mentioned that is because that's not really a factor over short periods of time. It takes months to build muscle mass... not days or weeks. If you see the scale rise over one week, it's water weight gain, most likely... definitely not muscle mass increase.

Yes, you will. :) Your body will adapt to the new levels of exercise, and will no longer need to hold on to that water to adjust. You'll continue to burn fat and lose weight as you go!

it all sounds good but I haven't seen anyone mention that muscle weighs more than fat so as you build up your muscles you might appear to be gaining weight while in fact you are building muscle. Go more by how your clothes fit and you feel than the scale.

Thanks for posting the articles. This is currently what's happening to me. I have a question maybe some of you more knowledgeable folks can answer regarding a statement in one of the articles:

"The process of converting glucose (carbohydrates) into fuel that your muscles actually store and use (glycogen) requires three molecules of water for every molecule of glucose. As your muscles are building up glycogen stores, your body has to retain extra water for this purpose"

If you are keeping with your program, will you ever lose that water weight, or will you always be hanging onto a certain amount of water weight?

Ignore the scale. It plays games with your head. Sorry to be blunt, but a 1-pound loss could be just a good poop away. True health and fitness is NOT the number between your feet. Worry about how you feel, how much more you can do than yesterday and measure progress by how your clothes fit. I wear size 6 jeans and weigh 147 pounds and my BMI classifies me as overweight. How is that possible? I'm very muscular and I'm working my body fat percentage down (23% now). I weigh more now than I did at my "skinniest," and wear a smaller size. I am in the best shape of my life and doing things I never thought possible.

Also, stick with the strength training, even if you do gain weight. As your body adapts, you will have to do more and more cardio to get the same calorie burn because you are more efficient. Then you turn it into an endurance activity and your body stores more fat since that is the preferred fuel source for endurance training. Muscle tissue is metabolically active, meaning in burns calories at rest while fat just sits there. Strength training also gives you nice lines and a fit appearance as you hit your goal weight.

Yes, working out can cause a temporary upward shift in your weight. It's a good thing, and I emphasize *temporary*.

Thanks for posting that article! I just read it and it makes perfect sense, I've given up working out in the past because it didn't seem the scales were budging so like you say it might pay to be patient! good luck!

I heard if you are not taking in enough fluids during workouts etc your body can retain fluid?? maybe try increasing your water intake whilst working out and see if that helps?? xx

I am so frustrated right now so I hope someone out there can help me! I keep my calories between 1200-1500 and I was only doing maybe 2 days a week of cardio, 1/2 hour on the elliptical and was losing 2 pounds a week. I wanted to work out more because it makes me feel great so this past week I did 5 days of the same cardio and started a little bit of weight training 3 days this week. I weighed in today, only once a week, and I gained a pound! I don't understand what happened I'm ready to cry! Anyone have any ideas what could have happened? Thanks!
