bicep curls aren't the most effective exercise because it only works one muscle, the biceps and one joint, the elbow. Therefore it is an isolation exercise, as a previous poster stated.
There are other exercises, such as underhand rows, chin ups, that work the biceps as part of a compound multi joint movement. Those exercises give you far more bang for your buck than isolation moves and are also more functional to every day life.
